Simailr problem with my 5056P

Hello Purists,
Some of you may have read my earlier post about the troubles I'm having with my 5056P. My watchmaker suggested (and quite resolutely I might add) that I keep the watch as close to fully wound as possible all the time. His position is that it will not run properly otherwise. So I took his advice and kept it wound well over 50% for three days - it ran perfectly.
I then decided to see what would happen if I let it run down to 12 hours and below. Well, the exact same problem resurfaced - it runs slowly and/or actually stops when the power reserve is below 12 hours. Is my watchmaker correct? Will the watch only perform if sufficiently wound? This hardly seems right as there are times when the watch just may happen to run down to 12 hours. In those circumstances, I may as well be wearing a sundial at night. I shouldn't expect the movement to perform accurately at 1/4 power or less? This just doesn't seem right to me.
It's time to send it back to Patek I imagine, or is it? With the horror story in this thread, I'm tempted to send it directly to H. Stern. What say you, men?

Really bad luck, they were supposed to be unbreakable nowadays. If you wind it to the end and the watch runs for some minutes, then stops, it must be the case.

Hi Breitlinger, A broken mainspring could cause the symtpoms described but there are any number of problems that could also result in the same effect: the watch is not running. Diagnosis over the internet is all but completely impossible so I'd rather not...

Are you relying on the power reserve indicator as an indication of how much reserve is left or are you timing it independently? Maybe the power reserve indicator is malfunctioning and the watch is not fully wound when it says it is?
