Ref. 1463 Service Question -- Replacing Tarnished Hands?
PP Geneva has my beloved YG 1463 (c. 1954) for service and has told me that the hands need to be replaced because they are tarnished.
The hands for the time and one of the sub-dials are gold. The stopwatch hand and the other sub-dial is a blueish metal. I am assuming that replacement would not include the gold hands and just applies to the blueish ones.
I understand replacement of the hands can substantially affect the value of the piece, but, more importantly, I don't want a watch from the 50s that looks brand new. As such I am inclined to authorize service minus replacing the hands.
At the same time, I have faith in Patek's estimation of the work which needs to be done and am hesitant to second guess them. The people at Stern in NY have been extraordinarily helpful in this process and suggested that tarnished hands may, at some point, flake and cause problems with the movement.
I would very much appreciate any insights on hand replacement, these 'blue' hands, or what you would do.
Thanks,
John
