Patek Philippe: Part 3: 25 years of collecting: into the naughty years!
So prices of vintage Patek exploded, pieces that were once highly accessible now were sky rocketing.
At the same time I had an urge.....with Patek there is always an urge!
I wanted to buy new, because I wanted my name on the certificate, to be entered into the archives of this great company. Maybe that's a bit conceited of me, but there is a real sense of pleasure of being the first custodian of a Patek Philippe.
It was 1997, an important year for me. I was getting proper old, I was going to be 30 😂😂😂😂
It was the year of the Pagoda!!
I sold a huge chunk if my collection, only the steel 522 art deco survived the cull.
I bought myself a wg Pagoda, a stunning piece. I really went for the platinum but no chance!!!
Following on from the Pagoda, Patek released one of the most controversial watches ever. The Aquanaut.
I loved it. It was a total contradiction, a Patek Philippe on a rubber strap - looked like a market job 😂😂😂
But wow, what a watch! A "beater" Patek!!!
Of course I jumped at it, one of the first 1000 made.
In 1999 I followed this with the Nautilus, I really can't live without a Nautilus in the collection, this time it was a new 3710.
I was happy for a while.....but then jumped on a Neptune!
It was cheap, only £2500.
A strange watch in a way.
I thought it was a cool Asian function watch, (Asian=Indian/Pakistan)
We like a little blingyness!!!
I had a nice steel Patek collection and for once hadn't sold anything and bizarrely added yet another!!
I got a call from ann AD, they had a Sculpture watch in steel.
I had read about these Russian special edition- looks like they were struggling to sell them and were released onto the global market.
Without thinking I said yes.
In it came, you judge for your self!!
Well this was the collection going into Naughties, I suppose there was a theme running here.
And I was content.

I would have thought it was a fake! Your story gets more and more interesting, Imran. And it's good to see you are starting to hold on to some of these beauties.
Yes, Imran, your journey only grows more interesting with each installment! You've introduced me (and evidently others) to a Patek which I've never seen. What a discovery!
