Miranda's analysis of the Nautilus Genève auctions in 2018 captures a pivotal moment in the Patek Philippe market, where Nautilus references experienced unprecedented price surges across multiple auction houses. This post delves into the community's reaction to the 'Daytonafication' of the Nautilus, questioning the sustainability of the trend and its implications for watch collecting. It offers a snapshot of collector sentiment during a period of intense market speculation for Patek Philippe sports watches.

Craziness. Even as a die hard fan of the Nautilus I can not explain just what has happened over the last few days.
The original 3700 in all guises had exploded, it has becone “Daytonafied”

Even the unpopular 3700 s/g has tripled in value

If it was just one auction one could say freak results, but in all four auctions..

The Nautilus is a fantastic watch in my opinion, but even I find the craziest prices being paid hard to fathom

Even the “unpopular “ 3710 broke records
Whilst the 5726 which is supposed to be the least well desirable went over list

The 3712, 3700 with box and  papers are definitely in vintage Daytona madness territory

I’m happy indeed very happy for those that own those pieces, but I wonder where watch collectors are headed

Is it all about the fashion? The fashion is very much sports watch.

I hope sincerely that other great pieces, just don’t die in this craze.

Here is a summary of all the Nautilus sold

About the Patek Philippe Ref. 5726

The Patek Philippe Reference 5726 represents a significant milestone in the manufacture s annual calendar collection, combining the practical sophistication of an annual calendar with a sleek nautical aesthetic. Introduced as part of Patek Philippe s modern sports-elegant lineup, this reference demonstrates the brand s mastery in creating complicated timepieces that maintain everyday wearability. The 5726 builds upon Patek Philippe s rich heritage of calendar complications, offering collectors a contemporary interpretation of haute horlogerie that bridges the gap between dressy complications and contemporary sports watches.

At the heart of the Reference 5726 beats the exceptional Caliber 324 S QA LU 24H/303, an automatic movement that showcases Patek Philippe s technical prowess in calendar mechanisms. This sophisticated caliber features an annual calendar complication that automatically adjusts for months with 30 and 31 days, requiring manual correction only once per year at the end of February. The movement incorporates a 24-hour indication alongside the traditional calendar functions, displaying day, date, month, and moon phases through elegantly arranged subsidiary dials. The self-winding mechanism ensures consistent power delivery while maintaining the thin profile necessary for the watch s refined proportions.

The 40.5mm stainless steel case presents a contemporary interpretation of classic Patek Philippe design language, featuring clean lines and perfectly executed finishing that exemplifies the manufacture s attention to detail. The striking blue sunburst dial creates remarkable depth and luminosity, with its rich color serving as the foundation for the symmetrically arranged calendar displays. Protected by a sapphire crystal and featuring a fixed smooth bezel, the 5726 balances functionality with aesthetic refinement. For collectors, this reference represents an accessible entry point into Patek Philippe s complicated watch segment while offering the prestige and technical excellence associated with one of horology s most revered manufacturers. The combination of stainless steel construction, practical complications, and distinctive design elements positions the 5726 as a highly desirable piece for both seasoned collectors and those building their first serious watch collection.

Perhaps expectedly, the big results of the SS models are finally bringing everything else along. I love the Nautilus, but this seems to have reached levels of pure market craziness now... One thing is for sure though: for as long as this lasts, it's a fascinating phenomenon to observe! ;-)

I totally agree, for many buyers it's all about speculative investment potential nowadays without any passion for the watches itself.

I have one business partner who owns a 3700 in yellow gold and steel. Since I know him maybe 5 years now, he always has the same watch except the last time I saw him, he was wearing a Reverso. I'll ask him what happened to the Patek Philippe and let him know how whealthy he is now... lol. this is just crazy

What is driving this mania? Three years ago, nautilus’ were trading at retail. What is the impetus for this bubble or is demand so great that prices will remain elevated? The nautilus never seemed like a limited edition type of watch until the past couple years. Was it the 40th anniversary hype that led to this? I love all my nautilus’ and am not a seller at any foreseeable price.... maybe I’m contributing to the mania?😜

With these crazy prices I still don't think of selling (could sell with handsome profit) as I will never ever buy again (or can buy) once I sell mine. My one and only Patek Hope to have a 2nd one in the future, who knows
