I am not really a collector, or even a knowledgeable enthusiast. I am just a consumer who likes to learn about watches as a hobby and my "collection" is very, very small. Just four watches. All different and all special to me in different ways. All say something about the people who designed them and built them, and in a way also about the people who owned them.
I do not know the answer to your question, but in my humble opinion a change of calibre makes the discontinued one neither more desirable or obsolete. The question, in my opinion, is whether this change of calibre adds horological value to the watch.
