I was slow to warm to the watch, but I've found the 5980 the watch I most frequently select for the day or for one-watch travel. It is completely comfortable, even during sleep, has excellent lume, runs as accurately as any watch I've owned, and looks appropropriate in any settng other than those calling for battle dress utilities or black tie.
While I find the Royal Oak Chronograph a more architecturally beautiful watch, the 5980's date window is more legibile, the monocounter equally readable, the bracelet more flexible, and the brushed surfaces a bit more protected from scratching. I'm also a fan of the Royal Oak Offshore, but it is not as versatile as the 5980 or ROC, even though it looks better with short sleeves.
