I was told
that even though they are essentially the same, there is a slight difference in how they attach, and that this difference is intentional. Now whether or not there is a way to overcome this, I do not know.

I believe that it is, but
that Patek are either unwilling or unable to sell you both. i.e. the case is the same for both watches, meaning that either strap should fit any 5167 model. The only minor difficulty is getting them to give you both rubber and SS straps.

The local service center told me a clear no when I asked 6 months ago, has this changed?
I ordered both bracelet and strap six months ago
I ordered one with both bracelet and rubber strap also six months ago. The AD didn't seem to have a problem with this... I should be getting it in about three or four weeks, so I can let you know how it goes...
