Wait and see

I agree with the other members that you might want to wait some more time until you make a decision on keeping or switching the time piece.

On your question re the 5159, I think its style is more classic than contemporary, that is why you find not so much discussion on it. It is simply less popular than other PCs, be it from Patek or other manufacturers. You may have also noticed that you find the 5159 with many dealers but it is certainly not a fast-moving item.

5170G vs. 5159G

By: Costa (aka Connie) : January 2nd, 2017-18:12
Happy New Year to all. I have a minor dilemma. I purchased a 5170G 3 weeks ago to go with my 5146R and 5110J. For some reason I am having trouble bonding with it. The 5170G does not give me the same feeling as the other 2 Patek references when I wear it. ...

Since it's only 3 weeks

I'd hang on to the 5170 for just a bit. How about swapping your 5146 for the 5159? That way your collection would have a worldtimer, a chronograph and a calendar complication=) Good luck on your decision! J

That is a very good idea.

I really should give the 5170 more of a chance. Maybe I will warm up to it.

Time young padawan! Be patient

This is a magnificent and imo a highly underrated piece from pp Wear it for a while before making any rash decisions as I suspect you will take a haircut on any change over Julian

Thank you.

Now that I have looked at the picture of the watch on my wrist more , from this post, I am beginning to like it more. I will take a wait-and-see attitude. Plus I don\'t like big haircuts, LOL. I appreciate the advice very much.

Wait and see

Sometimes the symbiosis with a watch is made even before the purchase

and sometimes it happens on the longer run. The latter is of course more difficult to detect. This style of watch, a beautiful understated classic (as I wrote here ) is certainly the one belonging to the second category. By the way, this is the version (...

Thank you very much for your comments; very helpful Mark.

One point you make really rings true to me. My 3 other Patek purchases, 5054J, 5110J, 5146R, were nearly love at first sight. It took me no time at all to bond with these 3 watches. This kind of instant gratification is wonderful and addictive. This has n...

I think the 5170g is a beautiful watch and I would certainly give it a bit more time.

 By: RussW : January 3rd, 2017-07:22
However if it fails to scratch the chronograph itch, have you thought about finding a 5070g to replace it?

I was very keen on 5159

And the Geneva Salon very kindly spent a few hours with me putting on all the PC,s. Have to be honest I took one photo of the 5159 and plenty of 5327 blue dial. I think the 5159 photographs well but was underwhelmed in the metal. I thought reading the dat...

I do like my 5146R very much. It is a warm looking reference. I have decided to keep the 5170G for now. I think part of the problem is that this is my first white gold piece. It doesn't "pop" like the rose and yellow gold references. It will take time to ...

the 5496 comes

only in Platinum or rose gold at this time. We may see a G at Basel this year with a colored dial. We can only guess.

Replacing after three weeks

 By: watch-er : January 3rd, 2017-12:27
could be a disaster for you if you bought new. The watch you seek now is similar. The 5170 is a manual wind so you can use when you want. I would keep it. The demand for them may change as happened on the 5070s.

Seems you have a perfect and cohesive trio all of which are beautiful.

World time, chronograph and calendar moonphase and each in a different color gold. Like others I suggest you give the 5170G more time for you to come to love it. That said, no reason to keep it if that feeling does not develop. Hope it all works out for t...

Thank you Patekova

You all are very kind to offer me advice. I agree that 3 weeks is not enough. I will keep the watch and wear it consistently for the next 3 weeks. I studied my collection carefully trying to choose a piece wisely to fill out the collection. I think I succ...

You are very welcome and I would like to add one more comment that might be a factor for you.

Historically speaking it is very rare for a Patek chronograph to have either Breguet numerals or a pulsations track. Usually there is a tachometer track. The white dial 5170G has both. The black dial which is also very appealing has neither a tachometer n...

I prefer the 5070 everyday and twice on Sunday's.

The 5170 never meant anything to me. They also decreased the size of the case for no reason. Laurent

I thought this watch was a "fine" watch when I first saw it. The more I've seen it, the more I like it. I really like the Breguet numerals and the pulsations. It is very understated, but I also appreciate that. I favor rose gold, but can really appreciate...

Thank you to all.

I flew to my AD this morning to look at a number of pieces including 5270G , 5159G, 5170G, 5270Rand 5140G. I compared them all to my 5170G. Considering what I have in my collection I think the 5170 has a place. He pointed out that the applied Breguet nume...
