second the motion

5970 is perfect in many regards. Not sure id call the 5070 a classic, but it is impressive and modern - and I regret parting with my 5070p. What I disagree with Mark is that the 5970 took time to get used to.  I think the reception to the launch of the 5970 was more positive than the 5170.  for me it is about dial design (5170 is bottom-weighted) and movement (while 5170 is technically superior, it lacks the charm of the lemania and has a "built for mass production" air about it). But they are all amazing watches (I particularly like the blue dial and breguet numerals on the 5170).

A little walk around the 5270G White dial+Blue dial and 5170G

By: Mark in Paris : November 13th, 2014-06:33
I've been lurking near the PC Chrono iconic Pateks lately and trying to discover what attracts me in a 3970, in a 5970 (and 5070) as in the last 5270G white (ref 013) and blue dial (ref 014) (and the 5170G). It is natural that watch fans usually prefer ol...

the time one needs to appreciate the 5270 and 5170. Although, to achieve bigger day and month indications / apertures the subdials had to be placed lower on the dial. As form follows function for the 5270 it doesn't for the 5170. My stronger feelings for ...

It is quite subjective indeed

and you say it right, everyone will need more or less time to judge these pieces. We only have to remain open minded and I guess many will see their opinion evolve (or not). Thanks for bringing your balanced opinion :) Cheers, Mark

Hello! Mostly a lurker, rarely a poster, only when I aquired my initial Patek. My first was an Aquanaut 5167. About 2 years ago I purchased my second Patek - Nautilus 5712. Absolutely loved both of them. I recently was in Vegas and a chance to play with t...

Happy event incoming

Congratulations, it's a fantastic choice imho. It has a beautiful and classic shape, a lovely dial finishing (which is not true for every Patek I could handle), and a fantastic movement. We'll be delighted to see your pictures once you get it. Cheers.

First of all, the blue dial looks ...

One thing I've learned about watches is that I need to take time to maturate what I could have discovered, appreciated and handled in my hands. My tastes evolve, I have a really soft spot for Independants (these are the watches I started with, together wi...

and I understand your thoughts very well. Not sure if I would always come to the same conclusion, but those kind of journeys are something very private and we learn a lot about oneself. To learn about watches (and us) while wearing them is something I lik...

Interesting and yes quite subjective so for me...

The 5070 and 5970 are perfect in every way and the change to 5170 and 5270 not bad but will never be the same. So for me as someone who owned all 4 I can say that 5070 and 5970 are with its a doubt my favorite 2 Pateks of all time. In fact if I only owned...

Why I may find Lemania < new CH29-535:

By: Mark in Paris : November 15th, 2014-06:16
I quite agree with your feeling Vandyke about the 5970 and the 5070. Let's give time to the 5270 but especially the 5170 to see if it will be a great Patek. I'm sure the 5170G will be so. Concerning the 5270, it is harder to forcast... Yet, the 5970R I sa...

I totally agree with you on that, Ken. [nt]

Thanks for expressing your feeling Ken

I fully understand your opinion and, by the way, I tend to agree. However, I'd like also to emphasize the fact the 5970 and 5070 have been here for a while and that it is always more difficult to move freely forward to a new product when the former one wa...

as the 5070 and 5970 love at first sight and everlasting. Again as owner of all 4 the 5270 and 5170 just don't compare and for me never will. More time doesn't change emotional excitement and charge instantly given by the former two. I was never sure of t...

I envy you :)

......I have owned 5270G first series, 5070P, 5970P and 5970R but not the 5170. Of them all, I would say I would only consider buying back the 5970P - for me, it is the quintessential classic PP complication, a pleasure to own, and exciting to put on ever...

Maybe your wishes will come true in Basel, who knows (5170 or 5270) ? As far as I'm concerned, l'll be particularly curious to know what the new 5170P will look like. Despite heavy Pt watches are not comfortable on my thin wrist, I agree on the fact the 5...

Nice report...

 By: Fricks : November 24th, 2014-10:28
... I agree with a lot of what you said, even if i love the brushed texture of the 5270G, which i think gives life to a dial, contrary to the 5170G or 5270G white, which feel "dry", a dead white dial, that doesn't play with light , without texture or fini...

I follow you on many aspects here.

First, thanks a lot for the picture which helps to compare the colors, even if pictures are usually not completly true to the real experience. I must say I always felt a Pt case was less shiny than a WG one... but I read that many other owners, including ...

"sand blasted"

 By: small-luxury-world : November 24th, 2014-14:54
The dial of the Lange Zeitwerk Handwerskunst is not sand blasted - not at all. In fact it is hand-engraved in tremblage technique. Sorry! Still it is amazing :-) For comparison and the pleasure of looking, PP 5170G vs ALS Zeitwerk Handwerkskunst: Best, Ol...

yes, indeed...

 By: Fricks : November 25th, 2014-04:25
... sand blasted is sued to treat glass usually. It was to give the idea of the type of dial that i mentioned the zeitwerk, which is indeed STUNNING!

Any info about the dial of the 5170G?

Cannot be just a piece painted in white, there must be something more to it.

Thanks for the comment Fricks, I appreciate it, and it is a pleasure to be able to discuss whith you in detail of your experience as it gives me food for thoughts before a next visit at Patek. Indeed for the WG composition, it is always hard or impossible...

Zeitwerk is hand-frosted

... to be precise, from what they mention. Anyway, indeed a visit to the AD can always be good. About Wg, last thing is that former version were "rhodie", rhodium bring more shine. With 5270 and 5170, its clearly less shiny BUT, from my personal experienc...

I fully agree

I prefer non rhodied surface too :) This evolution is a great improvement regarding long term resistance.
