i really like this watch Mark

Oct 21, 2015,21:55 PM

I have slowed down on acquiring new watches as of late, but it is nice to have something to aspire to.  I am in agreement with Raymond, this is my grail watch also.  It is possible but it will take a few years of saving and patience.  Gives me something to look forward to and work towards smile  Great report and great pictures. You have revived my excitement about collecting with this one.

[Novelty 2015] Review of the new Patek Philippe 5270 (3rd generation)

By: Mark in Paris : October 19th, 2015-15:26
Friends, Following the report I wrote after Baselworld 2015, about the two first generations of the 5270G reference, I think it is high time to introduce and have a close look at the latest iteration of the reference: the new 2015 Patek Philippe 5270G and...

Thank you Mark. I never

considered a manual winding perpetual and thus, never held 5270 in my hands. Your nice post made me curious and next time I'll visit my supplier, I need to correct that mistake. I guess we can expect also a platinum version rather sooner than later. Best,...

Give it a try?

As you know, we often discover nice surprises when trying something we didn't think of in the first place. Give it a try and you'll see if it sings to you or if, as you told us before, your prefer going another way. Yes, there will certainly be the Pt ver...

I will have a close look and if I like it, I will start to wait for the platinum. Best, Kari

I always thought a manual wound perpetual doesn't make a lot of sense at all till.........

I figured out that there are winders for manual wound watches!!!! Best, Ahmed

I love to see the movement side without the rotor ,It looks much cleaner and you can admire the movement fully without distractions. Best, Ahmed

True.

 By: dr.kol : October 24th, 2015-06:09
But still, you need to remember to wind the watch when wearing it. Best, Kari

This is my dream watch, my grail in watch collection.

Thanks for the very nice temptations, pictures and reviews. Now I have to convince my other half and slowly inject the intention poison ) Rgds Raymond

I like your enthusiasm!

As I said in some other articles, the Chrono-QP is iconic for Patek Philippe: they were the first to choose that complications combination in a wriswatch with the 1518. It always had a special place in the colelction and I must say this is also something ...

Excellent review Mark.

I held the blue dialed version in my hands Very hard to hand back.I just loved the balance of the case as well as the stunning blue dial. Julian

Thank you Julian, I appreciate :)

By: Mark in Paris : October 20th, 2015-06:00
We have indeed new owners of the 2 blue dial generations on our forum and they both look really good (I made a try of the blue 2nd gen. one too). These 2 complications work so well together, imho. Cheers, Mark

Thanks Mark for Excellent Review

Great elaborated review of 5270. Really fascinating and eye catching new models in depth. In May, I was almost set to go for it but was offered older dial by my AD which didn't appeal but new dial colour is glamorous. Am waiting for Blue dial which is lov...

Fascinating is a well chosen word

By: Mark in Paris : October 20th, 2015-06:05
I can't keep finding a very special appeal in this watch, it has everything I like: a nice presence, the ncie complications (and not just power reserves), the beauty, the fantastic caliber, the decoration... One thing I know is that we can take our time. ...

please let me add a picture that explains the patents

By: COUNT DE MONET : October 20th, 2015-02:59
in order of the patents that you have used the technical novelties are to find in the: white box ...synchronisation between clutch lever and blocking lever ( what is most astonishing of this solution is that nobody had the idea before as it is such a "sim...

Sometimes I don't know where you get some of your explanations but I love to read them and I'm not the only one. Share whenever you can! Back to your points, yes Patek has found clever and sometimes very simple solutions. This is maybe a clue about the fa...

Since the Swatch group ended the supply chain for other manufacturers Patek was forced to develop an inhouse chrono movement. And with what result! Another technical titbit is this: inside the red lines you can see a spring (!) that is used to move the co...

As they had to do it, they decided to do it seriously. Thank for the spring explanation Moritz, I noticed indeed they where quite veyr much used in this caliber. I'll look at it another way and have to read again Ron DeCorte's article about this new movem...

The 5270 family actually is a lovely provocateur!

 By: heartbreaker : October 20th, 2015-03:39
Dear Mark, thank you for your very well written article. My preference still goes to the first generation 5270G, which absolutely is one of my favourite watch. A quick question: are the six patents intended as improvements on the CH29-535 PS calibre reser...

My pleasure Elio and thank you for your comments :)

By: Mark in Paris : October 21st, 2015-09:34
I see that the 1st one really sings to your heart and that's very nice: we often spend a lot of time searching for one without success... As for your question, the 6 patents are included in the base caliber. The "Q" version has additional ones I have to l...

Thank you Mark, I've read the recommended article...

... and I've found it very educative and pleasant. After all, I already know Ron De Corte as an excellent popularizer. Now, I'd like to read a serious technical comparative between the best cronographs available today. I'm quite sure the 29-535 won't disa...

That would be a nice reading.

By: Mark in Paris : October 22nd, 2015-14:35
Maybe it exists concerning old calibers? If you find something don't hesitate to discuss it here! Cheers, Mark

I used to read RdC's articles on the Patek website's "Communication" page

 By: heartbreaker : October 23rd, 2015-02:54
You can easily take a look on what kind of documents are still available. Unfortunately, it seems that the last "official" contribution from Ron DeCorte is dated April 2013. I suppose now he's focused on his own watchmaker's job in Ohio. Ciao, Elio

That's where I found some articles from him indeed

By: Mark in Paris : October 23rd, 2015-09:02
They should keep on doing this kind of write-up on their site IMHO. Thanks for the update Elio

Thanks Mark for the excellent review

I learned a lot. You have convinced me that I have made the right choice(s). All the best Sam

Yes, you did and btw thank you for sharing them as you do

By: Mark in Paris : October 21st, 2015-09:40
Now you have another interesting contender on its way that will come to keep it warm. The best to keep you an extraordinary company. Cheers Sam, Mark

Thanks Mark for the insight...

the former 5270 "belly" version was on my radar for some time, till it got interupted by the unexpected arrival of the 5070P somewhere earlier this year, in the mean time I truly forgot that there was a new version, and if it wasn't for this post I would ...

Haha, if I can help you with your schedule, then it is my pleasure :)

By: Mark in Paris : October 21st, 2015-09:44
We seem to share the same taste on that matter and it would indeed be a great addition to a collection. I'm eager to see it again. Cheers Patrick, Mark

Excellent review Mark

 By: Fricks : October 20th, 2015-15:41
... As you know i am big fan of the 5270. Haven't seen this one in the metal yet, but until now, i cannot figure out the color of the dial. I've hear its different frm the opaline white of the 5960R. Or the new 5496R... Intriguing. I suppose that the refl...

I'm glad you enjoyed it Fricks

By: Mark in Paris : October 22nd, 2015-14:43
The Opalin silver is a true silvery dial (light grey with a blue hue). The rose gold case brings then more warmth and makes the overall watch harmonious. I couldn't have them side by side but the 5496R's dial color looked the same to me. Thanks Fricks! Ch...

One big issue I always had

 By: dr.kol : October 20th, 2015-21:22
is the pricing: I like a perpetual calendar with an automatic movement and I am a big fan of 240Q. At the same time, the chronograph part of 5270 is the same as the movement of 5170. Now, if you check the pricing of 5170G and add the automatic QP 5140G, y...

I think you have your answer Kari

By: Mark in Paris : October 21st, 2015-02:35
First, placing 2 complications in a single case is more difficult than to have them separetely in two different watches. The more you add complications in a single watch, the more difficult it is to make them work together. So a QP+Chrono is more difficul...

I can't say no

 By: dr.kol : October 21st, 2015-11:01
if Patek would introduce i.e. 5270P with black enamel dial... Anyhow, I feel that the manufacturer is a bit too ambigious with the pricing of 5270 and that probably explains why it is not a hot item. Best Kari

Yes, it would be a very appealing combination Kari

By: Mark in Paris : October 22nd, 2015-02:22
In the mean time I think these colors (black, blue) and materials (enamel) should be used wisely or I think it may loose its rarity. It is the fact we don't find them much that we like them so much Cheers, Mark

We seem to agree most of the time.

 By: dr.kol : October 22nd, 2015-03:41
I am afraid that soon we'll have a blue inflation. So many new blue dials that I'm afraid the attraction might disappear. Best, Kari

I agree with you Mark,

 By: beejo : October 22nd, 2015-09:26
They need to slow down on the blue I have my name on 5905P blue list,I was just thinking if blue dials are on fashion these days and in few years it's going to look out of fashion!! Although I am a white metal guy,I love the warm color of the rose gold i...

It will be a surprise... Make a guess?

 By: dr.kol : October 23rd, 2015-10:20

I don't have a doubt that you are going to receive yours first.......

 By: beejo : October 23rd, 2015-10:27
You are one their top clients so you probably deserve it. My ETA is 6 months later than yours hahahaha...........I believe you ordered Black........or maybe both Best, Ahmed

Do you think I'm 100% Nuts?

 By: dr.kol : October 23rd, 2015-13:43
I ordered only one as Patek will surely change the dial in case I will feel later that I made a mistake. Because of the more understated calendar data, I ordered black. The other reason is that I have so many blue dial Patek, that I could open a shop spec...

Hahahahah:).........

 By: beejo : October 23rd, 2015-16:38
Change the dial??!!!! Is that even possible or is it just a VIP service. I like the black as well and appreciate the black background on the calendar,I don't think you can mix the word mistake with either. Have a nice weekend . Best, Ahmed

Many years ago,

 By: dr.kol : October 24th, 2015-00:40
when I had just two Patek, I asked for a dial change to the other. London Salons said that they do not do such things without good reasons, Geneva just changed it after I asked to do the same when the watch was serviced. The new dial was also surprisingly...

We sometime need a little pause. I'm glad to see you're as interested by this reference as some of us are here. Yes, it is a very fine offer IMHO. Thanks for the nice message Cheers, Mark

Fantastic enabling review!

This is grail territory for me for sure. I have been smitten by this model since I read about it for the first time. I have tried without success to see one. Thank you for explaining all the improvement's this model brings us! Maybe someday....

Thank you for you kind comments!

I'm glad you appreciated it. I've been able to see different generations of these 5270 and wish you to be able to try it on one day too. Especially the RG I like very muc Cheers, Mark

I do love the 5270R but...

 By: YCNHE : October 24th, 2015-15:27
I love my 5970P more I do feel given the small numbers (I\'m guessing) the 5270 with the so called "chin" will become collectible - particularly if numbers of the 5270 remain small overall...it\'s just the sort of thing to pull a surprise at an auction on...

That might be the case but

 By: dr.kol : October 25th, 2015-08:10
I will not buy the "chin" because of the speculative future value. If the life will go as planned, it's only my "Next Generation" who needs to think about the values. Furthermore, I think that the chin is spoiling the balance of the dial. Your 5970P is gr...

Interestingly the 5970P dial is more

 By: YCNHE : October 26th, 2015-05:06
Matte then glossy - I agree 5270P with a gloss black dial will be quite remarkable

Let's hope...

Best, Kari

Another thought

 By: YCNHE : October 26th, 2015-05:14
It seems in recent years there have been a lot of releases with black dials 5170G, 5370G, 5271P just last year, 5396G Tiffany before - in order to keep black dials on complications special I hope that there won\'t be any more for a while...

Perhaps. But

 By: dr.kol : October 26th, 2015-08:21
what kind of colour the dials should be then? White, silver, blue...? Isn't it best to have a well-balanced amount of all colours? Best, Kari

I would add one thing about black/blue dials

By: Mark in Paris : October 26th, 2015-08:46
I was on the verge to think that way too but when I thought about it, these watches (High-end) are very rarely seen in the wild. It's the least we can say. So, black and blue dials will be even rarer. Thus, the only place where we seem to think they are l...

True.

The sport watches of Rolex have mostly black dials but nobody seems to mind. Best, Kari

The 5970P is gorgeous

By: Mark in Paris : October 26th, 2015-08:50
Congratulations for being its happy owner. I'm myself looking at the 5970R very closely and it is the most beautiful chrono-QP of the last 10 years for me. Cheers, Mark

USA '5270 R' Sightings?

 By: racerdjs : October 31st, 2015-04:45
Has anyone seen a R here in the USA?

Thanks for posting more pics Mark!

 By: BABKA : November 1st, 2015-20:21
I love the new rose version. However, the blue dialed G model is out of this world too and more suitable for every day wear.

It is indeed original with blue dial compared to silver and easier to have as a daily wear

By: Mark in Paris : November 3rd, 2015-13:54
A more modern interpretation of the Chrono-QP with this reference. Thanks for sharing your input Babka. Cheers, Mark

White gold

 By: watch-er : November 15th, 2015-08:09
looks the best to me. I am leaning towards the blue dial. The r just doesn't it for me in this reference.

Very good choice imho Bob

By: Mark in Paris : November 16th, 2015-07:59
The good thing is that it is more a matter of taste and in which occasions we are willing to wear it that counts as they are all 3 very appealing versions. I love R but still don't know if I wouldn't go for G silver if I was to purchase one though. Cheers...

Update: went with the rose gold afterall.

 By: watch-er : December 22nd, 2015-14:45
I think the blue dial is a bit faddish for a watch of this complexity. The white gold dial doesn't have the contrast of the rose dial to me.

Excellent news Bob!

By: Mark in Paris : December 22nd, 2015-16:21
This is a major acquisition and as you imagine we'll love to see your first owner pics when you get it. I also preferred the R version for its warmth. Less discreet but so appealing. Congratulations! Cheers, Mark
