after many watches and various Panerais that spoiled me, I was a bit shocked by the box of the DeepSea. Do not get me wrong, I am not talking about size but rather materials. I was not seduced by the green molded plastic box even if the box disapears for ever in a cupboard it is about the experience, the first contact with the brand I hardly remember that the Daytona I gifted to my father 20 years ago had a more handcrafted packaging. It certainly has to do with mass(?) production efficiencies and cost savings. Do you have examples of non machined Rolex packaging. I am curious to see if you have other opinions on the subject. quality interior should also show on the exterior!
I remember some of those old Rolex boxes were beautiful with embroidery and craftsmanship - everything is about cost effectiveness now!

Haven't got the cuboard to put that one in LOL. But seriously I think the problem here is that there are brands who deliver their timepieces in fantastic looking boxes. For one Blancpain does and I almost bought a PP just for the box! This means that if you don't get such a box you will be dissapointed. Strangly when you buy an expensive diamond ring, you also get quit a simple little box (certainly not way out of proportion like most watch boxes). So for me I rather go for a fine watch and buy a watch box (which is able to contain several watches) myself, but when the watch comes in a nice box this makes the joy of getting the watch even bigger.

and even if I sometime moan about that cupboard full of empty watch boxes, I enjoy them.
I believe I was more disappointed by the lack of attention rather than size or whatsoever.
I saw fantastic cardboard, paper or bamboo packaging that is more interesting than my DSSD one.
I believe that the box costs about 10 Euros maximum to produce and the more costly part being the inner trim because the outside shells must approx.2-3 euro, but again there are fantastic packaging costing a fraction of that.
I will enjoy the watch and loose the box deep in that cupboard so that I stop moaning about the CD/CI.

The box, printed material, bag, cloths and all.
I would not accept my Porsche 911 Turbo to perform great (analogy to watch movement) but have a crappy/flimsy body or cheap interior (analogy to box/case).
Otherwise I would have bought a $70k less car (corvette).
