P.9100
The P.9100 calibre is the first automatic movement with chronograph functions developed by Officine Panerai and it is produced entirely in the Officine Panerai manufacture in Neuchâtel, with materials and standards of workmanship at the peak of the sector in terms of technology, quality and reliability.
With a chronograph with a vertical clutch and column wheel, the new calibre is unusual in that the chronograph minutes are displayed by a central hand which jumps forward once every 60 seconds. It also has the useful flyback function. This enables the chronograph hands which are already running to be returned instantaneously to zero and restarted without it being necessary first to stop them and return them to zero, then to restart them. This function is controlled by the push-button at eight o’clock, which is also used to return both hands to zero when the chronograph has already stopped.
The P.9100 calibre is 13¾ lignes (31 mm) in diameter, it is 8.15 mm thick, it has 37 jewels and it is made up of 302 components. The two spring barrels in series give a power reserve of 72 hours, equivalent to three days. The choice of the double spring barrel enables thinner, longer springs to be used, which is beneficial for the duration and evenness of the supply of energy. The automatic winding is carried out by a bidirectional rotor on ball-bearings operating two narrow arms terminating with hooks, which wind the springs of the barrels with every movement of the rotor itself. Supported by a single bridge with a KIF Parechoc® anti-shock device, the Glucydur® balance wheel oscillates at 28,800 alternations/hour (equivalent to 4hz) and it is the variable inertia type, with the regulation carried out by adjusting four square-headed screws fitted in the outer perimeter of the balance wheel; the spring is therefore free, without the curb pins which can be a source of irregular timekeeping.

THE SEA, HISTORY, TECHNOLOGY AND DESIGN
While the Panerai brand was founded in Florence in 1860, the Panerai watch came into being in the world of the depths of the sea. To be precise, the depths of the Mediterranean, where in March 1936 the commandos of the Italian Navy first tested the prototype created by Panerai in response to the request from the General Staff to develop “a special luminous underwater watch”. The Royal Navy, as it was then called, evaluated the creations of many established producers, but the only example which satisfied all the rigorous requirements of the military authorities was the one which would become Panerai’s first prototype, and also, according to many, the first professional underwater model in the history of watchmaking: the Radiomir.
In the years before the Radiomir was created, watches had already been made that were water- resistant because they had a double case, that is, they were inserted in a hermetically sealed case, or fitted in a screw case that could resist the pressure of water to a certain depth. But water- resistance alone was not enough for the Italian military authorities, who required a watch which met several other requirements that were fundamental for the commandos who would operate underwater for long periods, frequently in critical conditions.
When the Florentine watchmaker Panerai created the Radiomir, the company had already been a trusted supplier of the Navy for some time. In 1938, two years after the success of the prototype, it put into production the first ten examples for the men of the naval assault forces which were part of the Italian Navy’s Submarine Command. On their wrists, over of the waterproof suit of rubberised fabric, the commandos wore both a watch, the indispensable instrument for synchronising all wartime operations, and other precision instruments developed by Panerai, such as the depth gauge and the compass.
Equipped only with this vital equipment, the divers of the Submarine Command carried out their operations riding slow-speed torpedoes (Siluri a Lenta Corsa or S.L.C.), special underwater vessels which carried two operators seated astride the vessel. On these human torpedoes, also known as “pigs”, the commandos explored the depths of ports in the Mediterranean under extremely difficult conditions, in the darkness of the night in waters which were frozen and muddy. They descended 40 metres below the surface of the sea and remained immersed for hours, depending only on their instruments, which consequently had to be guaranteed to provide the maximum resistance, reliability, accuracy and legibility.
The identity of Officine Panerai is still today that of the company which invented the Radiomir. In the years which followed it has created a collection of timepieces which have become part of the history of watchmaking for their uniqueness and authenticity. About a century after developing its first instruments for the Italian Navy, Panerai still finds its own reference universe in the world of the sea: in every new creation it instils that remarkable blend of history, technical skill and design which makes Panerai watches unique.

The Officine Panerai collection presented at the Salon International de la Haute Horologerie 2013 rises from the depths of the sea and of time, to affirm once more the unmistakable identity of these top-of-the range sports watches in which everyone produced is a synthesis of these elements.
The new Submersible range of watches is a perfect interpretation of this synthesis. Designed with the vocation of exploring the depths of the sea, the new Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days Power Reserve Automatic Bronzo and the Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days Automatic Ceramica have movements developed and produced entirely in the Officine Panerai manufacture in Neuchâtel. These are combined with cases incorporating research into technology and case materials, in a design where every detail is faithfully inspired by the watches created by Panerai for the Italian Navy during the last century.
The family of in-house Panerai movements is enhanced by two important novelties in the field of chronographs: the P.9100 calibre, the first Panerai automatic movement with the chronograph flyback function, and the P.9100/R, which combines the chronograph function with the Regatta countdown for the start of yacht races. The regatta countdown is an instrument of the highest technical content for all the sailors and navigators who take part each year in the international races of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge, the main international circuit for vintage and classic yachts.
The new Panerai collection includes several fascinating versions of the historic Radiomir 1940 case. This represents the moment of transition, in about 1940, from the first cushion case that was characteristic of the Radiomir of 1936 and 1938 to the more massive Luminor, distinguished by the device protecting the winding crown, the definitive version of which was established in about
1950.
Finally, the new and extraordinarily complex tourbillon squelette is a testimony to the skill and expertise of the master watchmakers of Neuchâtel and the research and development carried out by Officine Panerai’s Workshop of Ideas. It is used in the first Panerai pocket watch, a remarkable timepiece in ceramic reserved for collectors of the most exclusive and sophisticated Special Editions. This watch is an original creation which brings together the P.2005/S movement and the Radiomir case in ceramic.

With the new Luminor Submersible 1950 2500m 3 Days Automatic Titanio, Officine Panerai continues this long tradition, closely linked to its own history, enriching it with new technical content to offer underwater watch enthusiasts a professional instrument of exceptional performance.
The Luminor 1950 case, 47 mm in diameter, of the Luminor Submersible 1950 2500m 3 Days Automatic Titanio is made of brushed titanium, a material which combines non-allergenic properties and lightness with the structural robustness required to resist high pressures, external stresses and corrosion. The water-resistance, also ensured by the classic Panerai device protecting the winding crown, is guaranteed to a depth of 2,500 metres, and the little valve engraved with the He symbol on the caseband at eight o’clock enables helium to escape when ascending from deep dives, thus preventing the gas exercising potentially dangerous pressure on the case. The unidirectional rotating bezel, which moves precisely in one-minute clicks thanks to a special system patented by Officine Panerai, has small markers in relief, the design of which has been inspired by the model created in 1956 for the Egyptian Navy, and a graduated scale which enables the length of the dive to be read.

The absolute darkness which rules in the depths of the sea is reflected in the appearance of the Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days Automatic Ceramica, the new Officine Panerai Special Edition which, with its matt ceramic case, its P.9000 manufacture movement and the details inspired by the historic heritage of the brand, represents a perfect synthesis of history, technology and watchmaking design.
The Luminor 1950 case, with the black ceramic bridge protecting and sealing the winding crown, is made of sandblasted black ceramic, a material synthesised from zirconium oxide powder which is both light and tough as well being resistant to scratches, corrosive agents and high temperatures. The classic shape of the case 47 mm in diameter is created by a complex series of working and finishing operations which also give it a particularly uniform, smooth matt appearance.
The unidirectional rotating bezel enabling the length of the dive to be determined is made of the same matt ceramic as the case. The only colour which contrasts with the profound black of the case and of the dial is the ecru Super-LumiNova® on the applied hour markers, the graduated scale and the partially skeletonised hands. The date window is at three o’clock while the classic Panerai small seconds dial is positioned at nine o’clock.

SIHH 2013: Panerai PAM507 Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days Power Reserve Automatic Bronzo
In the mind of every sailor, bronze immediately evokes images associated with the sea. Vintage yachts and ships are rich in objects made of this material, which reacts to the passage of time and effects of the atmospheric by acquiring a patina which makes every single item unique. Two years after the extraordinary international recognition given to its first watch with a bronze case, Officine Panerai presents the Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days Power Reserve Automatic Bronzo, a new Special Edition produced in the same material with its eternal fascination and its decisively nautical associations.
The bronze of the Luminor 1950 case is CuSn8, an alloy of copper and tin in the pure state, highly resistant to the corrosive action of sea water and the atmosphere. As well as its high degree of structural robustness, this material preserves its original warm tone while acquiring, with the passage of time, a seasoned appearance as a result of the patina which covers it. This patina is the result of the bronze’s reaction to external agents (air, humidity, heat and wear); it does not alter the properties of the material but simply marks the ageing process, making each example unique and personalised. The size of the case is the same as that of the classic of Panerai watches, 47 mm in diameter, and classic too is the bridge device with the locking device which seal the winding crown.
Immediately evident on the dial of the Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days Power Reserve Automatic Bronzo is the important new feature which distinguishes this model: the display of the power reserve of three days on an arc-shaped indicator positioned at four o’clock. This very useful function joins the date display, the device for zeroing the seconds hand that is invaluable when synchronising the watch with a reference time signal, and the system for rapidly adjusting the time, the hand of which can be moved forward or backwards in jumps of one hour without affecting the running of the watch. The dark green dial, with applied hour markers, is surrounded by a studded bezel in bronze with the scale for measuring the length of the dive. The bezel is connected to the case by a special system designed and patented by Officine Panerai to ensure that the ratchet moves precisely from one click to the next.
The sapphire crystal back is fixed by a titanium ring, a metal chosen for its non-allergenic characteristics. Visible through the back is the Panerai P.9002 calibre, developed and produced entirely in the Officine Panerai manufacture in Neuchâtel. Consisting of 237 component parts, the P.9002 automatic calibre has an oscillating weight which rotates in both directions winding two spring barrels connected in series which accumulate a power reserve of three days. The balance wheel oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 alternations/hour and it is the variable inertia type, fitted with four regulating screws arranged radially.

Officine Panerai presents the Luminor 1950 3 Days Chrono Flyback, a new chronograph with a flyback function and an automatic movement with a power reserve of three days. Available in a purely sports version in steel or as a more elegant one in red gold, the new chronograph is the first to be made by Officine Panerai using the new P.9100 calibre, developed and produced entirely in the House’s manufacture in Neuchâtel.
The flyback function, controlled by a push-button at eight o’clock, instantly returns the chronograph hands to zero and simultaneously restarts without it being necessary first to stop them and return them to zero by pressing the stop and reset buttons. To make the times clear and easy to read, the chronograph minutes and seconds hands are both positioned centrally on the main dial and distinguished from each other by being different colours: the seconds hand is blue while the minute hand is steel or gold in colour, advancing instantly in one jump every 60 seconds. This choice of colours makes it possible to preserve the quintessential design for the black dial, with simple bar hour markers and numerals at the cardinal points, a date window at three o’clock and a small seconds dial at nine o’clock. The structure of the dial is that designed by Panerai in the late 1930s to ensure high visibility even in very low lighting conditions, and it is formed of two superimposed plates, the upper one being perforated corresponding to the markers on the dial so that the luminescence of the Super-LumiNova® can emerge.
The case of the new Luminor 1950 3 Days Chrono Flyback is 44mm in diameter and water-resistant to 10 bar (about 100 metres), or 5 bar (about 50 metres) in the gold version. The materials used are of absolute excellence: the steel is AISI 316L stainless steel, extremely resistant to corrosion, and the red gold is 5Npt, an alloy with a high percentage of copper, which gives the colouring greater intensity, and a proportion of platinum, which helps to prevent any oxidation. Executed in the same case material and with a brushed finish, the characteristic bridge device with its lever for sealing the winding crown helps to ensure the high degree of water-resistance of the watch.
On the back of the case, the 12-sided caseback has at its centre a sapphire window which reveals the manufacture P.9100 movement. This is the first automatic chronograph calibre developed and made by Officine Panerai, and its sophisticated construction is revealed by numerous details. It has a vertical clutch, a column wheel, two spring barrels connected in series which give the watch a power reserve of three days, a rotor which winds the springs of the barrels by moving in both directions, and a variable inertia balance which oscillates at 28,800 alternations/hour. P.9100
The P.9100 calibre is the first automatic movement with chronograph functions developed by Officine Panerai and it is produced entirely in the Officine Panerai manufacture in Neuchâtel, with materials and standards of workmanship at the peak of the sector in terms of technology, quality and reliability.
With a chronograph with a vertical clutch and column wheel, the new calibre is unusual in that the chronograph minutes are displayed by a central hand which jumps forward once every 60 seconds. It also has the useful flyback function. This enables the chronograph hands which are already running to be returned instantaneously to zero and restarted without it being necessary first to stop them and return them to zero, then to restart them. This function is controlled by the push-button at eight o’clock, which is also used to return both hands to zero when the chronograph has already stopped.
The P.9100 calibre is 13¾ lignes (31 mm) in diameter, it is 8.15 mm thick, it has 37 jewels and it is made up of 302 components. The two spring barrels in series give a power reserve of 72 hours, equivalent to three days. The choice of the double spring barrel enables thinner, longer springs to be used, which is beneficial for the duration and evenness of the supply of energy. The automatic winding is carried out by a bidirectional rotor on ball-bearings operating two narrow arms terminating with hooks, which wind the springs of the barrels with every movement of the rotor itself. Supported by a single bridge with a KIF Parechoc® anti-shock device, the Glucydur® balance wheel oscillates at 28,800 alternations/hour (equivalent to 4hz) and it is the variable inertia type, with the regulation carried out by adjusting four square-headed screws fitted in the outer perimeter of the balance wheel; the spring is therefore free, without the curb pins which can be a source of irregular timekeeping.

The start of a vintage yacht race is a moment of remarkable beauty. The boats of every class, with timbers sometimes a hundred years old or more, gather together at the starting line between the buoys, driven only by the wind which fills the sails and by the skill of the captains and crews who with a few simple instruments must carry out complicated tactics to master the sea, the wind and time. Timing in particular is crucial: in the minutes preceding the start, marked by the ritual of the strict countdown signalled by the judges’ flags, the Lords of the sea must line up behind the buoys without crossing the imaginary line before the race has started. It is not a simple operation for yachts which are often tens of metres long with an immense sail area exposed to the unpredictable nature of the elements.
These are passionate moments at the start of which Officine Panerai is well aware, given that since 2005 it has sponsored the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge, the main international circuit of races for vintage and classic yachts. From the most beautiful locations of the Mediterranean Sea to the waters of the Solent, from the Caribbean Sea to the coast of New England on the East Coast of the United States of America, Officine Panerai gathers together each season hundreds of vintage yachts and thousands of sailors to celebrate the beauty, elegance and uniqueness of yachts which have been part of the history of sailing, since the end of the 19th century to which many of them date back.
From the union of Officine Panerai and the world of classic sailing the Luminor 1950 Regatta 3 Days Chrono Flyback Titanio was born. This is a chronograph with an automatic movement and a three-day power reserve, fitted with the Regatta countdown function, specifically created for yacht racing starts.
The remarkable simplicity of using the Regatta countdown function is evidence of the excellence of the technical innovation achieved by the new P.9100/R automatic chronograph calibre, the movement of the new Luminor 1950 Regatta 3 Days Chrono Flyback Titanio.
An orange push-button at four o’clock moves the central orange chronograph minute hand back one minute at a time, until it is at the correct position in relation to the length of the countdown. On starting the chronograph, by pushing the chronograph stop/start button at ten o’clock, the relative hands begin to move, indicating first the minutes and seconds which remain until the start, and then, when the countdown has finished, the time elapsed since the start of the race. The push-button at eight o’clock ends the time measurement, returning all the chronograph hands to zero. Alternatively, if it is operated while the hands are still moving, it activates the return-to-zero (flyback) function of these hands, thus enabling a new time interval to be measured immediately without having to operate the stop and reset buttons.
The black dial of the Luminor 1950 Regatta 3 Days Chrono Flyback Titanio has the sandwich structure and the classic Panerai design distinguished by the large linear hour markers and figures, enriched by the elements enabling the indications of the chronograph functions to be read. The chronograph hands are central and distinguished from each other by different, easily recognised colours, while the orange hand of the hours rotates within the small dial at three o’clock, mirroring the small seconds dial at nine o’clock. The flange carries not only the scale of up to 15 minutes for the countdown to the start, with the five final minutes picked out in orange, but also the tachymeter scale expressed in knots which enable the speed of the yacht to be measured over a defined distance.
The Luminor 1950 case has the characteristic Panerai lever device for protecting the winding crown and it is 47 mm in diameter. It is made of brushed titanium, a material which is light, strong and non-allergenic, contrasting with the polished bezel. On the back, a wide sapphire crystal window reveals the P.9100/R movement, with its rotor which winds the springs of the two barrels while oscillating in both directions, providing a power reserve of three days. The open back also permits the admiration of other details of the sophisticated chronograph movement, with its column wheel and variable inertia balance which oscillates at 28,800 alternations/hour.
Water-resistant to 10 bar (about 100 metres), as is to be expected of a professional sailing instrument, the Luminor 1950 Regatta 3 Days Chrono Flyback Titanio (PAM00526) is part of the Contemporary Collection. It is supplied with a rubber strap with strong sports connotations, using a patented Officine Panerai system enabling it to be easily replaced by means of the little tool provided with the watch.

These are passionate moments at the start of which Officine Panerai is well aware, given that since 2005 it has sponsored the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge, the main international circuit of races for vintage and classic yachts. From the most beautiful locations of the Mediterranean Sea to the waters of the Solent, from the Caribbean Sea to the coast of New England on the East Coast of the United States of America, Officine Panerai gathers together each season hundreds of vintage yachts and thousands of sailors to celebrate the beauty, elegance and uniqueness of yachts which have been part of the history of sailing, since the end of the 19th century to which many of them date back.
From the union of Officine Panerai and the world of classic sailing the Luminor 1950 Regatta 3 Days Chrono Flyback Titanio was born. This is a chronograph with an automatic movement and a three-day power reserve, fitted with the Regatta countdown function, specifically created for yacht racing starts.
The remarkable simplicity of using the Regatta countdown function is evidence of the excellence of the technical innovation achieved by the new P.9100/R automatic chronograph calibre, the movement of the new Luminor 1950 Regatta 3 Days Chrono Flyback Titanio.
The black dial of the Luminor 1950 Regatta 3 Days Chrono Flyback Titanio has the sandwich structure and the classic Panerai design distinguished by the large linear hour markers and figures, enriched by the elements enabling the indications of the chronograph functions to be read. The chronograph hands are central and distinguished from each other by different, easily recognised colours, while the orange hand of the hours rotates within the small dial at three o’clock, mirroring the small seconds dial at nine o’clock. The flange carries not only the scale of up to 15 minutes for the countdown to the start, with the five final minutes picked out in orange, but also the tachymeter scale expressed in knots which enable the speed of the yacht to be measured over a defined distance.
The Luminor 1950 case has the characteristic Panerai lever device for protecting the winding crown and it is 47 mm in diameter. It is made of brushed titanium, a material which is light, strong and non-allergenic, contrasting with the polished bezel. On the back, a wide sapphire crystal window reveals the P.9100/R movement, with its rotor which winds the springs of the two barrels while oscillating in both directions, providing a power reserve of three days. The open back also permits the admiration of other details of the sophisticated chronograph movement, with its column wheel and variable inertia balance which oscillates at 28,800 alternations/hour.
Water-resistant to 10 bar (about 100 metres), as is to be expected of a professional sailing instrument, the Luminor 1950 Regatta 3 Days Chrono Flyback Titanio (PAM00526) is part of the Contemporary Collection. It is supplied with a rubber strap with strong sports connotations, using a patented Officine Panerai system enabling it to be easily replaced by means of the little tool provided with the watch.

RADIOMIR 1940
In about 1940, the Panerai workshops in Florence perfected a new case, designed to meet the increasing demands of the commandos of the Italian Navy. The case had evolved from the one presented in 1936 which is known today as the Radiomir – a term which originally referred to the luminous material patented by Panerai to make the dial readable in the dark – but it presented some innovations designed to make its construction even more solid and hardwearing.
In the new case the strap attachments were no longer formed from a strong piece of steel wire bent and welded to the case, as they had been previously. This design might expose the watch to the risk of the strap coming off in the course of the extreme operations which commandos were called upon to undertake when on board their underwater assault craft. In the 1940s version, however, the lugs were larger and much more solid, being milled from the same block of steel as the case, of which it was an integral part.
As well as the strap attachments, the system of attaching the strap was also changed, becoming much simpler and more secure. While previously it had been necessary to sew the leather round the wire strap attachments, the new construction had small holes in the lugs themselves in which little tubes could be fitted, having been inserted through the loops at the ends of the strap. This was a more modern solution, which also meant that the leather strap could easily be replaced.
As well as the modification to the strap attachments, other changes altered the Radiomir case in a definitive way, presaging the subsequent development of the shape of the Luminor case which came out a few years later. The cushion-shaped outlines were now less accentuated. The winding crown was slightly larger and cylindrical rather than troncoidal. The overall thickness of the watch increased from about 15 mm to almost 17 mm.
So was born the Radiomir 1940 case, which Officine Panerai is presenting again today – with the same forms but in a thinner version - in new models of the collection, watches endowed with the strength and fascination that only being a part of history can convey.

The enthralling Radiomir 1940 case is making its debut in the Historic Collection of Officine Panerai with the new Radiomir 1940 3 Days, available in steel or red gold and fitted with the P.3000 calibre, a hand-wound mechanical movement with a power reserve of three days.
In the Radiomir 1940 3 Days the essential forms of the Panerai design have been integrated with haute horlogerie technical solutions in the choice of materials and in the construction of every detail of the watch.
The dial, with the small seconds hand at nine o’clock and the date window at three o’clock, has the sandwich structure of two superimposed plates with the luminous material between them, its light being visible through the holes made corresponding to the hour markers in the upper plate. This type of dial construction had already been designed by Panerai at the end of the 1930s to provide greater brightness and legibility. The colour of the dial is black in the steel version and brown in the red gold model.
The case is made of AISI 316L stainless steel, a grade extremely resistant to corrosion, or of 5Npt red gold, an alloy with a high percentage of copper, which gives the colour greater intensity, and a proportion of platinum, which helps to exclude oxidation. In both versions the finish of the case and bezel is polished.
The P.3000 movement, developed and produced entirely in the Officine Panerai manufacture in Neuchâtel, can be admired through the large sapphire crystal window in the back. Hand-wound and with a diameter of 16½ lignes, the P.3000 calibre has a power reserve of three days achieved by means of two spring barrels in series. It has wide brush-finished bridges with chamfered edges and a variable inertia balance with an unusually large balance wheel (13.2 mm in diameter) which oscillates at a frequency of 3 Hz. The P.3000 calibre also has the device which enables the hour hand to be adjusted in jumps of one hour forward or backward, so that its adjustment does not interfere with the progress of the minute hand or the running of the watch.
The Radiomir 1940 3 Days (PAM00514) and the Radiomir 1940 3 Days Oro Rosso (PAM00515) are supplied respectively with a black leather strap or a brown alligator strap, and they are part of Officine Panerai’s Historic Collection.

In 2007 Officine Panerai launched the P.2005 movement, a sophisticated hand-wound calibre with an innovative interpretation of the tourbillon regulator, distinguished by a simple but revolutionary insight which makes the movement unique. The traditional regulator rotates the balance- escapement assembly continuously on itself, to correct position errors caused by gravity and possible friction: this is a particular problem with pocket watches, for which the tourbillon was invented, but it also affects wristwatches. In the innovative Panerai tourbillon, however, the cage which contains the balance and escapement rotates on an axis which is perpendicular to that of the balance, rather than parallel, and it rotates once every 30 seconds instead of the traditional 60 seconds. This construction compensates for running errors in a more effective manner and thus provides more accurate time measurement.
The tourbillon regulator, in its elegant and spectacular P.2005/S skeletonised version, is the protagonist of a timepiece of very high technical content: the Pocket Watch Tourbillon GMT Ceramica, a model which pays tribute to the long history of Officine Panerai. The pocket watch played a part in this history at the end of the 19th century, when the Orologeria founded by Giovanni Panerai in Florence displayed on its shelves numerous examples of these watches created by the main Swiss makers.

Officine Panerai presents the Pocket Watch Tourbillon GMT Ceramica, an exclusive pocket watch which combines echoes of the past and the innovative technical content of contemporary haute horlogerie in an original and fascinating way.
The Pocket Watch Tourbillon GMT Ceramica is the first pocket watch from Officine Panerai but there are precedents for it in the history of the brand. The inscription “Pocket watches by the main Swiss makers” appeared on the window of Orologeria Panerai in Florence since the start of its activities, but the Panerai “Workshop of Ideas” has never been limited solely to selling and, already by the start of the 20th century, it was creating for the military authorities of the Royal Italian Navy a series of timers.
The new Pocket Watch Tourbillon GMT Ceramica consists of a Radiomir case 59 mm in diameter in ceramic made from zirconium oxide, inside which is the P.2005/S hand-wound movement with tourbillon regulator. Twelve rods link the case to the movement, which looks as if it is suspended in the centre, with its skeletonised dial and the sapphire crystal which is fitted in the ceramic back. The same supports, covered in ecru Super-LumiNova®, act as linear hour markers, emphasising the quintessential design and advanced technical aspects of the watch.
The comprehensive work of skeletonising reveals the sophisticated technical details which distinguish the P.2005/S calibre, produced entirely in the Officine Panerai manufacture in Neuchâtel: the three spring barrels which create a power reserve of six days, readable by means of an indicator mounted on the back of the watch; the various finishes of the components, a large proportion of which are blackened by galvanic treatment; and above all the characteristic Panerai tourbillon cage which, to compensate better for running errors due to gravity, makes two rotations per minute on an axis perpendicular to that of the balance. A small ecru disc mirrors the rotation of the tourbillon, making two turns per minute in the small seconds dial placed at nine o’clock.
Also made of black ceramic is the chain, attached to the case by a skeleton device shaped like the characteristic bridge that protects the winding crown of the Panerai Luminor, and easily removable by pressing on a small button. The single links, the shape of which is inspired by that of a nautical chain, are linked by universal joints which ensure great resistance and at the same time provide the maximum flexibility. Once the chain has been removed, the watch can then be transformed into a table clock by using the special support, also inspired by the shape of the bridge, which holds the case and can also contain the chain, removed from the watch, inside it.
The Pocket Watch Tourbillon GMT Ceramica (PAM00446) is an exclusive Special Edition created in only 50 units. As is traditional with the brand, this pocket watch is also water-resistant and guaranteed to a pressure of 3 bar (30 metres).
