Hello all,
Lewis Machine & Tool (LMT) has been around since 1980 and have been manufacturing complete weapons and producing parts. LMT licensed the SOPMOD stock from Crane ( a division of the NSWC Naval Surface Warfare Center in Indiana) and sold it commercially. It's a great stock as the cheekpiece has ergonomic design for a solid cheek weld. For my longer precision AR-type rifles, I usually use a Magpl PRS as has more adjustments and better adapted for scopes. It's heavy and very robust piece of gear. This year at the 2014 SHOT Show, LMT announced a new stock called the DMR (Designated Marksman Rifle). I got mine recently and after spending time I can say that the DMR is awesome!
The LMT DMR (top is 556 and the bottom is .308):
You can tell by the above picture that the .308 version is a bit longer in the front to accommodate the AR308 platform. More on this later...
There was much discussion in the firearms community that it was a copy of the Magpul but IMO there is quite a few differences. The advantage of this stock over the Magpul PRS is that the LMT DMR can fit over a standard mil-spec carbine buffer tube (aka reciever extension tube). Thus you can easily switch from a collapsible stock (like the SOPMOD) to the DMR very quickly. The Magpul utilizes a rifle buffer tube so you are stuck with those type of buttstock. The LMT DMR is also noticeably lighter than the Magpul.
Another aspect that people noticed was the adjustment knob. There are two, one for elevating the cheekpiece:
The other for the LOP (length of Pull):
Rotating the knobs felt secure with a detent stop at various adjustment levels. Once set to the desired setting, the adjustments held up solidly. Here you can see the design of the cheekpiece, it's similar to the SOPMOD so it has a nice comfortable feel to it.
The 556 and 308 DMR's fit milspec buffer tubes. For my builds I use LMT buffer tubes or from Advanced Technology International. For these particular stocks they went onto LMT tubes. Fit was just like my other AR's, snug with no play , in other words perfect!
With the cheekpiece raised:
The pad adjusted for a longer length of pull:
The LMT DMR stock features 2 QD (Quick Detach) mounts and can be used on either side. I use the Gear Sector slings with some of my AR's so the QD attachment works fine with this stock. I'm sure the other popular slings with standard QD's will work just as well. Now let's fit one to a new build:
Slips over the buffer tube just like a collapsible stock:
When it hits the detent, you can use a round to press the lever down. I used a pin punch to do this:
With the lever pressed down, you can slide it all the way forward to the castle nut:
With the stock fully forward the DMR is not locked:
Pull back on the stock and it will click onto the first adjustment hole of the carbine tube and lock in place:
You can confirm by the lever in the up position. Note that if you require a longer LOP, the LMT DMR can be adjusted in 2 positions off the buffer tube.
With it locked in place, there is a slight gap. This is to accommodate the variations of plates and castle nut sizing.
On the bottom of the LMT DMR stock is a compartment. You can take a flat tool or use a round to open it up:
It reveals a 1913 Picatinney rail for a monopod.
Cover is soldi when it's on without any rattling.
Bottom view of the DMR:
As I said before IMO the LMT DMR is great! As for the difference in the 556 and the 308, the 308 is a bit longer. LMT makes the fantastic MWS rifle which uses their longer buffer tube. The LMT MWS buffer tube is similar in length to the Vltor A5. They chose this as the 308 bcg is longer than a .223/556 and requires a shorter buffer when used with a standard carbine tube. With the longer MWS tube you can use carbine buffers. So if you have a LMT MWS rifle, you can use the 556 stock but there will be a bigger gap as the 556 DMR stock is shorter. The 308 stock can use either the standard milspec carbine tube or the MWS/A5 tube.
So if you are looking for a adjustable stock for you LR308/AR10/MWS platform rifle, make sure you take a look and handle the LMT DMR!
HAGWE everyone!
