As discussed with CaliforniaJed yesterday, here comes today's wristshot of the LUC Chrono One As the MM is at the spa, this was the only Chopard choice.

Where macro functions leave a lot to be desired

As do my photographic skills... I will look if I have some movement shots lying around. As long as I am juggling the job and a small baby, the photography is unlikely to improve, but one day

That's fine - even without macro the caseback of watches can be appreciated! I like the rotor, very clean and tastefully made unobtrusive

It has a vertical clutch, so one cannot see as many details but it is certainly nicely made. And after your explanation I now even know what bit does what

They don't jerk when starting since no gear teeth mesh - therefore no potential teeth collisions. Also in theory having it run continously would not affect power reserve nor wear out parts like a horizontal clutch does since friction is negligible.

The downsides as you said, you don't see much of it...they are usually covered by bridges and take up less space, I guess the remaining space is often used for automatic rotor winding mechanisms?

I personally love horizontal clutches, but I appreciate the technicality of the vertical ones. This Chopard is one such fine example.

One still sees quite a bit as the rotor obscures little, and some interesting bits, like the column wheel are not covered by bridges. Nice movement to observe

Most likely would be shown as a cutout through the bridges, as it's the iconic classic hard-to-manufacture component as a mark of high horology versus it's cam counterpart. They will gladly show it off through the bridges!

My only mechanical chronograph prior to that was a Poljot handwound one, with a cam mechanism and solid caseback. And I knew much less about watches prior to getting the Chrono One and starting lurking around PuristSPro

That looks interesting with the two toned finished on the case. Is this column wheel movement based on the Venus chronograph?

A Poljot movement based on the Valjoux 7734 cam movement, IIRC. The machinery was sold to the Soviets after the 775x family was introduced.

I guess it will always have a special place in my collection

I'm very much partial to this steel model, as the later Chrono One's pushers seem "off" to me, design wise.  I love the larger crown and Datograph style pushers here, with the more straightforward case. 

A very clean and classy chronograph, but just a hint of rugged too; Chopard did everything right with this one.  I do think however, that as much as I love this dial combo, I wonder why they didn't offer more colors; perhaps a blue dial or a nice gray with white sub-dials would be superb too.

But not sure. It makes for a spectacular combination of features but I would not mind a water resistance of more than 30m, so as to reduce anxiety if caught out in the rain

Wonder, if they will use the movement in some more models - so far very few watches with this movement have been made...

The R&D costs and time must have been high, and the movement looks superb. I wonder why they haven't built more distinct models around the movement?

Or so I at least sincerely hope

Let's see if Basel brings any surprises!
