in your picture that gets attention, Blomman:
Up to now mine was the only sample that I knew of which is lacking the luminous dots on the dial around the alarm disk. Instead there are black rectangles.I thought it was due to the redial on mine. Now I see in your picture that the luminous dots are not there either.
Can you or someone else tell me more about dial versions with or without the dots?

But this one should be from approx 1960.

 

I have seen a couple more on different sites with the same dials like ours.

 

What bugs me on with this dial;

 

Luminous on the hands, but not on the hour marks?

Luminous on the hands, but no markings around SWISS MADE?

Rectangular hour markings? On early memos I have seen triangular (dark blue) hour markings, but then there is no luminous on the hands.

The dial is too clean, no mark of aging at all.

 

If you compare yours and mine;

Your alarm marker perfectly touches the outer dial, mine “hangs” with a distance.

Your hour and minute marks are longer, mine is squarer.

 

What is right and what is wrong – I don’t know…

 

Hopefully some of the vintage experts are able to help us out!

and I knew before I purchased it. I am not questioning that fact. Sorry if I may have caused that impression. You were the best consigliere I could have had with me.
I was just curious to learn more because Blommans sample was the first I saw next to mine that does not show the dots either.

To me, your dial has been redone, but it is not weird, as a lot of dials were ruined, due to a water resistance problem.

I see what you mean about the 6 o’clock.

But if you look closely the 6 o’clock hour mark on mine is shorter then on your photo.

An indication of that there should be some text there?

I agree with you that the luminous dots at the hours seem to miss.

No markings around the SWISS MADE on your photo either. Do you know when they started to put the L-L R-R T-T on the dials?

The most notable different is the “12” instead of the JLC logo.

But if you look closely you can also see that the 6 and 9 o’clock marks are different.

My marks are divided in to three, while the one on your photo are divided in to two.

 

I start to think that if your dial is the correct one, mine is not only re-painted.

It has been re-dialled.

 

But as I mentioned before, I am no vintage expert.

I'm on several topics, and posts to prepare at the same time, and I have a special guest who came from Great Britain, so I begin to be in trouble...



As for dials, Swiss Made and Swiss were used till the end of the 50ies for radium dials ( or not luminous dials, too ).

T Swiss T or Swiss Twere used on Tritium dials from circa 1961 / 62 to the end of the 90ies.

Basically.

There would be interesting to dedicate a post on this topic.

You bought a watch from the 60ies, and you want to service it in 2010.

There are no Tritium dials anymore.

JLC put another dial, close to the original one, when the dial is totally ruined.

OR, if the dial is in bad condition, they try to clean it.

OR they relume or and repaint it.

Of course, JLC doesn't do anything without the owner's permission.

OR some watchmakers re do the dial, as I saw on some watches.

There are many explanations to that.

It was the steel black dial Master Reserve de Marche on bracelet in 2003:

But it was the Master Geographic that attracted me to the brand.

At that time, the AD here only had the white dial Master Geographic.

I was a little anxious to get a JLC then and comparing it with the black dial RDM, I chose the latter as I haven't had any watch with a display back at the time.

I find myself thinking about the Master Geographic every now and then....and finally got one as well:

BTW I have just sold the RDM earlier this month too, a little sad to see it go after 6 solid years.

Hmmm... this brings back memories

My first JLC was the Reverso Grande Date. The Reverso models have drawn my attentions since i'm into watches. After a few visits to AD's i though the GD was the perfect Reverso for me.





After while i finally had enough funds and was able to buy my first JLC, the Reverso GD... After wearing it a few weeks, i had the feeling this watch was just not me. It's a beauty, it's elegant, beautiful size, classic... but just not me.
So it's gone and it's replacement is still with me and will never leave

Monochrome, then you understand me what I was rambling about…

One thing to try a bit at the AD, another thing to actually bring it home with you!

 

I agree with you the Reverso GD is beautiful! I was very tempted by the crystal back, but finally went for the Revero GMT.

 

But I must confess that I don’t find the XGT case as comfortable to wear as for example the GT or the Reverso Gran Sport case.

 

Would you mid telling us which replacement you went for instead?

I have been trying different Reverso models and used to be convinced that the Grande GMT would be the best choice. Than i tried the Grande Date... and fell in love. Until it was on my wrist for a few weeks. Nothing wrong with this watch, i still think it's a superb beauty. But just not "me".

Since the Reverso GD is gone (a year now) i'm still considering another Reverso... maybe the GT would be the best choice, but next time i will try it a bit more before buying.

After selling the Reverso GD i bought something completely different... a Sarpaneva Korona K1.
The K1 is here to stay!

Because of some changes in my life i wanted to give myself a watch to mark this period. This had to be a new watch and it had to be very special to me...

The Reverso GD is a beautiful watch and it had been a dream for a long time, to once own a JLC Reverso. Unfortunately the Reverso GD was not "me". Selling the JLC Reverso increased my budget for this "special watch" significantly, so when i met Stepan Sarpaneva at Baselworld last year i immediately knew what to do...
