Horological Meandering

That would be nice...

By: Mark in Paris : January 2nd, 2015-03:03
I've been asking myself nearly the same question Salman.

I think it could be very nice for a watch fan to wear a pocket watch from time to time, especially when we see the craftmanship available and the complication we can get for a lower budget than wriswatches.

But It is not very practical to use and I think I would use one only if I wear a 3-piece suit and put that watch in the inner jacket's pocket. Quite rare for me to say the least smile

But that would be nice!

Cheers, Mark

I very rarely see anyone with a mechanical watch much less a pocket watch. (nt)

The funny part of this question...

 By: SuitbertW : January 2nd, 2015-05:43
Hello Salman,
all the best for the new year to you and your family, btw!!!

I asked myself this question more than once - even more so, because I probably still have more PW's compared to WW's.

But what I find really funny, most people today use their "watches" exactly like an old time pocket watch - i.e. they
pull out their cell phone and check the time smile

Best wishes
Suitbert

Lol how true :)

My Dear Friend...

So nice to see your post here and thank you for your kind wishes, Wishing You and Yours the Best Year Possible in 2015 smile

When I read your post I really had a good laugh smile, would love to see your pocket watches of course.

What do you imagine the last person using wrist watches will be thinking about his watch and our hobby, what sort of thoughts will be in his mind?

By the way I fondly remember our meeting and realizing how I was in the Hazardous zone and still am, thanks to Oliver for the amazing graphic smile

Be Well my Friend,

S

I do find ironic, that a cell phone has replaced a wristwatch which replaced..

A pocket watch.

I do it when I wear a vest

 By: donizetti : January 2nd, 2015-06:39
which in wintertime is about 1 to 2 times a week. I always wear a wristwatch in addition though. I do have two nice watch chains that I inherited but usually I just slip the pocket watch in the vest pocket. In summer I don't wear three piece suits so then the wristwatches will have to do.

Best
Andreas

Thank You Andreas :-)

Do you think you are the last person on Earth who still uses his pocketwatch? If not then can you imagine what would go through your mind if you were?

If it is not too much trouble would love to see pics of your pocketwatches and chain.

Have a Great Weekend,

S

I think there will always be some who take some pleasure

 By: donizetti : January 2nd, 2015-07:08
in a slightly anachronistic touch to their clothing, or indeed their whole way of life. So I am not worried of being the last one on Earth ... Pocket watches are also nice conversation pieces - remember the second act of Die Fledermaus, for example? People, especially women, certainly find them much more interesting than wristwatches. The effect is a bit similiar, I find, to wearing a boutonniere, it is not for everyday, but it puts a smile on peoples faces as well as on that of the wearer.

As for the watches, here they are. Nothing horologically special going on but all dear heritage pieces. One of the chains is also in the picture, please note the gold nugget one of my great-great-granduncles mined in the American west!

Best to you!
Andreas

Last person I knew was my grandfather....

 By: Ares501 - Mr Green : January 2nd, 2015-07:48

That was more than 3 decades ago....and since then

it all went downhills for me smile

Even my grandfather turned to wrist watches later

Today wearing pocket watch can be perceived as pomposy or vanity

On other hand only people I think nowdays that would look good and "natural" with

pocket watches are artists or dandies

which lead me to conclusion that perfect candidate to wear pocket watch is our Mo

smile

Damjan

Not the last on earth; there are at least two of us

I wear one with a vest; sometimes just for fun; other times just to exercise the watches that I have - fat ones, thin ones, old ones and new ones.
Mechanical, quartz, tuning-fork, even an automatic pocket watch.

Cheers!

PS - do you suppose pendant (cufflink, brooch) watches would sustain a thread???

PPS - never thought of myself as artist or dandy, but looking back at some old photos ... maybe there's something to your theory!

I wore my grandfather's pocket watch daily for years in my pants pocket.

 By: mkvc : January 2nd, 2015-11:47
It was (and is) an old Omega. I just stuck it into my right pocket and went about my business, pulling it out when I wanted to know the time. Every step I took (and I was a student at the time, so I walked a lot and ran when late for class), it slapped against my thigh. It kept good time, did not absorb too much pocket lint, and is none the worse for wear. Old watches are tough.

I agree...

Heavy Duty Pieces Indeed and especially significant since it connected you with you Grandfather, I never got to know mine, so I wish I had something of his as a heirloom. If you have a picture of it handy, would love to see it.

Yes, my son ...

He wear a Minerva pocket watch as his beater but he owns several (Tissot, Zenith and Omega).

Go figure, despite his young age he is hooked on analog records, loves Beatles etc.

Cheers,

When a pocket watch is more appropriate

 By: Harv : January 12th, 2015-05:42
It's been a long time but I have returned.
Some years ago I posted this item and think that it is still appropriate here.

Please excuse the redundancy.
