Horological Meandering

From about a year ago where I purchased a handful of these classic German pilot watches and chose which one I liked best. DEKLA, Archimede, LACO and Stowa… Due to quality, value, finishing, case thinness, presentation, quick delivery, superb customer service and over all bad-ass factor, the Stowa Flieger 40 won my heart. Alas, there *MAY* still be room to sharpen the pencil here. My ONLY gripe about the Stowa was the 40 mm case size and almost 49 mm lug to lug made it wear a bit too large on my 7 inch wrist and never fit quite properly. Enter the new LACO Ulm: 39 x 46 x 10 mm. So as compared to the Stowa one millimeter smaller case size, about 3 millimeter smaller lug to lug and .8 millimeters thicker than the Stowa. With a hand wound moment also. Everything else is here: Heat blued hands, matte black dial, legible Arabic numerals and 20 mm lug width to make strap changes with ease. Pretty close to the Stowa eh? BUT perhaps better fitment and wearability! I’m still mulling it over but may have to give it a shot. What do you think of this LACO Ulm 39 mm, especially from those that don’t have giant wrists?? Cannot comment on the fit on smaller wrists, though 🤷🏻‍♂️ Personally, if I went down that route I would probably prefer a central seconds hand, though 😊

That would be one of the trade offs. But one I’d be willing to live with since a have a couple other watches with central seconds hand . Thanks for your comment !

As you know, I own several Stowas.  I have looked at the Lacos and they are fantstic watches too.  I do prefer the Stowa design and look a bit more and to me they also feel and look like they are finished a tad better than the Laco counterparts.  In the end, you can't really go wrong!  My wrist is closer to 7.5" and my 40mm Flieger Klassik fits great.

🤩 🤯 Impressive! I wonder why the numerals are backwards on the dial? Also, it looks like the logo under 12 may have been removed or scratched? 

Okay so brief horology history lesson for the day... You are looking at a V2 rocket program watch. The reason the watch is so big is that it was used to film the launch of Nazi SS V2 rocket testing. The numbers are mirror images so the film did not need to be reversed like negative film. The scratched out letters are written in Rune, which was a Nordic/Germanic alphabet and it stands for the Nazi SS. Someone prior liked the watch, but hated the association with the death squads.
