First of all, I hope you enjoy the book and it makes for a good traveling companion. As for the independent world, there are certainly different "categories" of independents.

There are those with relatively big operations and then there are those who operate alone or with a small team to help them achieve their vision. All have the advantage of not having to answer to a corporate hierarchy though some of the bigger independents do have investors that might have some influence on the product. Not that there is anything wrong with that but it is a difference practice model. Since my tastes are quite eclectic, I have pieces from some big brands and the different levels of independents. There is something very special about the watchmaker plying his craft in a converted garage or basement working on their wonders not having to answer to anyone but their collectors in a one on one relationship.
My tastes too are varied, and happy to cross from small to big and back again in terms of brands. And wholeheartedly agree with your last comment, and I think all here probably agree too; there is most certainly something special about the real small operations working watch to watch. Im looking forward to digging into the book. I got a little preview listening to the Podcast over the weekend with your friend from down under.
I don't use the term 'grail-worthy' very often but it would definitely apply to this watch! This to me is what small batch independent watchmaking is all about.
