Tlingit natives told us about a "mini-Ice-Age" about 1750; the glaciers advanced as fast as you can walk
They have oral history of having to flee several times as the glaciers came down, then move back after they receded.
In Western recorded history we can document about this much (images from park brochure)

It tells a long story but our narrator who is Tlingit herself, was on her first day, and got us all (including herself) a bit bewildered as she told it. She’s primarily a fisherman not tourist guide.

Judging from some recent youtube videos, being in a small boat or walking around at the toe of a glacier is not the safest thing to do...

Yes, and that's why we stayed well clear of the glacier
Our captain stayed about a mile away. The photo with people walking along the bottom shows another group of loony people who did get off their ship to explore.
Even with our small boat or kayaks we didn't get anywhere near the edge. It was constantly cracking and falling ... the seals definitely knew how close NOT to go.
Human is small compare to nature but
also we as human spoil all this glacier....getting thiner and thiner every where
