I kind of enjoyed getting up and out early the other day so a few hours ago I went back and re-shot the same location... it was just as cold this morning ; )

All photos taken with the Canon 5D MkII and 85mm f/1.2L

a bit cold, but beautiful sunrise... meanwhile Hokkaido, Aomori, Niigata, Ishikawa are all getting 'tons' of snow - wish I was there ; )

...is interesting. In the US, power lines are all very organized and there is rarely a power failure unless a power pole comes down, is knocked over by a car, etc.

I noticed that in Tokyo the power lines were a bit more chaotic...there were a lot of them bundled together. But I came to realize, and believe, that there was a method to the madness, and to trust that they would always be functional (Japanese efficiency being on par with the Swiss).

Conversely, when visiting Thailand and Cambodia, I saw the same type of power-line chaos, but within hours came to know that they indeed were not very reliable. In both countries, black-outs were the norm...

Either way, I took many photos of the tangled messes...I appreciated the patterns they made outlined against the blue of the sky...

I have lived here for over 30 years and to be honest I can't remember the last time there was a power outage in my area... When there is a quake the gas can stop, but it's just a matter of resetting the gas meter after checking. From time to time the trains stop due to a blown transformer and quake damaged areas may loose power.

I kind of like the overhead wires... maybe just use to them. It was definitely part of the composition in photo 4.

In any case the meaning is clear. Actually there was a lot more traffic on 4-Jan when compared to 1-Jan, given the same time of morning. For the second shot I had to wait about 20 minutes for the cars and train to pass (there is a train crossing near the red lights in the second photo)...

Well, I hope you won’t have to wait until next 1st January to take “peaceful shots” 😉

one of the things that struck me the most, while in Tokyo, was the absolute lack of people along some roads.
The area next to Hokusai's museum was like that.

Visitors sometimes have the impression that it's bumper to bumper on all streets at all times... just not true. U-Turn after any holiday is of course packed... 30-50 km traffic jams, but you only travel on those days if forced to. Also days of the month that end in a 0 or 5 are traditionally more crowded... I leave it to your imagination ; ) I drove motorcycle for many years... one of the quickest ways to get around.

Kazuyo Sejima was the architect for the Sumida Hokusai Museum... fascinating structure.

I liked much more the building itself than the exhibition; i thought they had more artworks!

The city by night is actually quite bright... the exposures are almost like daytime ; )

Here's a photo from Shibuya looking in the direction of the Zebra Cross... the photo was taken on New Years morning around 11:00 AM.  That's Tower Records on the left with the yellow trim...  even Shibuya has a quiet time ; )

...long out of business in the US (I believe). That's where I bought my Swallows baseball T-shirt...still have it : )

could be a one-off local store... not sure about the details, but a good location for hard to find music...

Those shots of empty streets really appeal to me. Thanks for posting these.

One of the first things I do every morning is look out the window to see what kind of day is developing... most of the time it's still dark outside ; ) The air always seems a little better in the morning... and if you pay attention you know where the sun will cross the horizon... I have an unobstructed eastward facing balcony... I will try to do more 'empty streets' this year...
