A question on calibre.

Hi guys,

I have a question on the renowned Patek calibre 240.
The patek website puts the year at which the calibre is awarded the patent was in 1977. 
But watching the Piaget purist video, a similar calibre was done by Piaget in 1957 called the calibre 9P.  (For altipiano)

By similar I meant that the rotor is an off-centre design. So did Patek adopt the idea from Piaget ?

Just a question to seek opinions and clarification here.

And Universal Genève did it a bit before than Piaget...

Somewhere in the mid 50ies... I would say 1955 / 56, with the Cal 215.

Now, to know if and how Patek took an inspiration for their Cal 240, that is another question. I have no answer here.

Hello there.

You have hit a very, very interesting spot and still up to date topic of the watch world!

First of all: Piaget 9P is a manual movement, not an automatic.

I trust you mean the calibre 12P?

In 1954, eleven months before Universal Geneve, a watch company called Büren patented the micro rotor movement.

Universal Geneve and Paiget had to pay Büren a licence fee to use it!

Piaget's P12 was introduced in 1959.

Just recently Piaget paid homage to its 12P 50iest birthday by releasing the 1208P.


Patek came late, very late with its calibre 240.

But the 240 came with some extra titbits: with two ball bearings in the rotor/winding system and the Gyromax balance wheel.


Another very, very interesting and TOP micro movement comes from Chopard: the L.U.C 1.96!

Any serious watch fan will be ecstatic by these letters and numbers, such a great and beautiful movement it is.


Most recent development: Panerai's P.4000 micro rotor movement from 2014.

That was the question I had in mind. Which manufacture housed the micro rotor first.

Know that this topic is on the radar again: I like the idea to focus on micro rotor movements as another theme for a watch collection.

There are some very nice ones out there ...

HISTORY of CALIBERS - A possible section on the Front Page !!!

Dear Oliver:

After reading the comments or Moritz (Aka COUNT) it occured to me that the Watchprosite may use a separate section on the HISTORY of CALIBERS, which to me will be very interesting. How it should be organized is not clear to me yet, but as an example History of Calibers may be combined with WatchTech perhaps. I am sure our Team Purists can figure a good way to implement it so that this section can effectively serve the interests of the community. 

From Moritz's comments, I realized that the genes of all the watches are their calibers, and these genes are expressed in different dials and cases making up the watch companies we know today. Furthermore, the calibers underwent evolutions, mutations and even extinctions.

Thus a section on the HISTORY of CALIBERS could shed light to the REAL story of Horology.

Hi Jim

that is a very good idea and "shame on us" that we did not come to such a logical conclusion.

But, in all fairness, it will be a big task as there are so many calibers from so many manufactures if it should be a comprehensive one.

To start with micro rotor movements is a good idea.

On the other hand discussing each case individually has also its appeal and has more the "character of sharing", passing the information from one watch fan to another watch fan.


The managers of this site have to decide on this one smile.

can be found here, but one has to check the "past" with lots of posts. Who has the extra resources to do it? If I would do it, I would probably do my own book and even than I don´t have the time for such a project - good or bad ;-)
