Complicated patek or Rolex Comex

I have been thinking about my next acquisition and it really comes down to two options. I have recently shifted much of my collection to PP. I just did a big trade consolidating several watches for a new 5970J . I have been thrilled with the result. The 5970 may be the perfect watch. It's the perfect size, the layout is legible, the look is extremely elegant and the quality is remarkable. I have also been wearing other PP's as daily wearers. Nevertheless, I have always wanted a COMEX. I love the Sea Dweller and the rarity factor and romanticism of the extreme divers watch has always captured my imagination. I know it only a dial and caseback but it just is really the only Rolex now that interests me along with other rare models like the Omani SeaDweller. Which would you guys lean to in the next round of insanity? Thanks and a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year to all....

by makers other than the two you mentioned. The current trend of the Comex makes me scratch my head because so much of the value is related to something not related to the quality of the watch at all, simply the rarity of a dial and case mark. 

You already have a Patek which, as you mentioned, is the perfect watch. Adding another complicated piece to compete with the perfect Patek?

I have been all over the roadmap over the past 35 years and have since realized through this website and others, there are folks making incredible pieces. Their devotion to the craft is far more important than the idea of producing watches on a much larger scale. This, I now find to be very appealing. 

This hobby, if you want to call it that, takes everyone down a different path depending upon level of interest and financial capability. 

At the end of the day and as you said, certain pieces capture your imagination and that is what makes this so interesting.

I'm a Sub-aholic, and issued Rolexes are my cocaine!  Military Subs and Rolex-Comexes are very high on my list of life's essentials.  I will wear these watches for anything and everything: at work, for dinner, travelling, jogging, washing the car, walking through deserts, or diving on wrecks. I'm not reckless, but they are tool watches!

My Pateks give me equal pleasure... and they are not safe-queens, but I am a little more precious about them. Miles G famously showed pictures of his 5970 at play under water off the back of his boat in the Med (but he did the same with a Rolex 6239 Newman and a Rolex 6062 - brave man!!).  That's not quite for me, but when I want to wear something a little more elegant, any of my Pateks will fit the bill.

So, another Patek, or a Comex? I can't answer that for you, but they are both great in the right environment.

Putting a few numbers into the mix... total Rolex-Comex production is less than 2,000 watches over a 35 year period, and probably less than 50 watches come to the market each year. Pateks you can buy every day, and generally, there are multiples to choose from... if you have the Comex itch - scratch it!!
