Patek Philippe

Happily, the 5270 I saw in a London AD's window just before Christmas is "sold" and hopefully with an appreciative new owner who is enjoying his watch.

But what was surprising, as of today, the AD has three unallocated 5270s available from stock.

Unfortunately, they weren't in the January sales.... damn!!  Otherwise there might have only been two left..!

If I had to keep just one of my watches, it would be my 5970 for sure!

The 5270 looks bland compared to the 5970, which just "jumps out" for me.

Old Dato and 5970 for me, all the way, while I am not at all inpsired by the new Dato and the 5270, aince the first pics I saw....

The design is always debatable, but technically the 5270 is a top inhouse movement.

It has a complex build minute counter, starts possibly much smoother and stops more accurately and is in flyback function much more

gentle to the movement.

I have to saz possibly smoother as I did not compare both and have to rely on literature.

I would choose this one, especially if I see that the second market is asking for the same price for a 5970 as for the 5270.

We are all different, but who is agreeing to such a deal???

There is only one flaw in the 5270 that I will not mention anymore, as I did quite often before.

i thought this was an application piece?  if so, how could the AD have so many unallocated 5270s?

My local dealer has the models in the window that the experts here say you wouldn't usually see.

Sometimes it is a step forward AND a step back.  With the 5270 Patek introduces its own manual wind chrono movement (the venerable 27-70 is from Breguet) with an instant jumping minute counter (with Lange has had for years in all the derivatives of the Datograph).  That is wonderful progress.  However, a step back on the calendar plate.  With the 3970 and 5970 the pusher at 11 o'clock advances all indications by one day per push.  So it is incredibly easy and convenient to reset the watch if it has run down and been sitting (and Lange offers this with the Datograph Perpetual, but instead of fishing for a toothpick, Lange offers a pusher at 10 o'clock).  This convenience goes away with the 5270.  If the watch runs down, all indications have to be reset, one by one, using a toothpick.  So I guess I opt for this one, that adds the complication of a large date (so easy on the eyes to read the one thing that counts on a perpetual, the date).  Jeff
