Patek Philippe

I was quite surprised to discover, a few days ago, the 5130 " Mecca ", after seeing the " Dubai ".

Yes, PP did the same with the 5110, but here, with the " Mecca " and the " Dubai ", we go a step ahead.

The Dubai showed a superb all black dial, and to say all, I was convinced, as I thought that a black dial missed in the World Time collection.

But here, what to think?




Well, I will be a bit cruel, maybe, but I think that this green dial looks a bit cheap, too original, not very à propos ( it is hard to find the good word to describe my feeling... Gadget, maybe? ) on such a mythic watch.

Anyway, this latrest version will be released in a limited Edition of 150 pieces, in platinum, if I got it well, and at the same price than the normal version, which, to be honest, is more interesting with its blue dial, in my point of view.

Colors and tastes, will you say...

Patek did research this peace well, as you can see.

Now, wheter it is easthethically pleasant or not is always an idividual issue.

I personally do not like the idea of enagaging religion that much with watches, or any other commodity, as religion is something that is detached

from earrthly objects.

Having said that: PP and VC doe have a strong link to religion, which all here will know.


Therefore: another marketing product from Patek, only.

Linking a luxury watch to a religious place seems in fairly poor taste as the concepts of religion and ostentatious wealth are not exactly complimentary.

Having said that, as a heathen non-believer I'd pick the green version over the blue in a heartbeat.

 

But in the PP case, my guess is that they will sell, and not only for these religious reasons...

Hence the paradox, cultivated by PP throught the concept of LE on this watch.

To me the reference to Mecca is clearly a religious aspect.

No other city alteration (just the Dubai) has a also a differently coloured dial.

And in general: green is the colour of Islam and the prophet.

but is sold here in saud as a celebration of finishing biulding the great clock recently in mecca.. its huge!

and with no doubt the biggest clock in the world!

and completes the whole picture: it has to do something with this new gigantic public watch in Mecca, too.

I read about it but did not do any research.

It is a very nice move from Patek to have launched such a watch.

it is the 100 annyversari Oeding-Erdel WT 5110 from 2006.

Only four times eight, in each metal hence four time, were made with a red Münster, dial still the "same".

I read somewhere also from a Munich edition, but not really sure if the author has simply mistaken Münster with Munich.

But I will post about this if I am back home and can trace the article back on my computer.

Green generally speaking is the color that represents Muslims, if you look at the Flag of Pakistan, the Green represents the Muslim Population and the White the various different ethnic groups and minority religions.

Did not mean to offend you but I am entitled to my opinion based on facts and history. There is no right or wrong, only perspectives and views. Your are entitled to yours and I respect that. I would also like to point out that I did not discuss religion but I did mention that reason why the color green was chosen by Patek Philippe based on my personal understanding and view. You also assumed in your reply that I have no knowledge of my beliefs and that I should go to people who do, I am by no means an expert and do not want to claim that but I do know some things atleast I hope

Salman, you are right green is one of the colours of islam.  Green is the traditional colour of islam because the tribe of the prophet mohammed had a green flag and to them it represented paradise.  Hence the watch is green.  I dont think patek is emulating and large clock but rather emulating a colour representative of the religion.

That is also a key interest of Muslims, to know where east (Mecca), when they pray.

That is something that Patek has missed here.

 

I changed my mind actually about this piece: it is nice!

Cause: it gives the watch a feel like a novel from G.E. Lessing: "Nathan the Wise".

In essence: the play fuses all religions!

 

Very nice watch!

... and yes, GG had a compass in the winder to locate Mecca, you were right.

I just found the info on the net, did not know about it until you mentioned.


In Patek's case: much, much more appealing interpretation of the topic!

Also to a wider Muslim audience as the writing is not Arabic on, like on the GG.

GG's edition is too exotic.



A nice Patek, although a bit much marketing is involved, but still a nice piece.

Just putting " Mecca " in green and the central part of the dial may not be seen as an " appealing Interpretation ( ? ) of the topic.

It is a simplist " clin d'oeil " to Muslims, or to Flippers.

For the GG , it is much more complicated: Did you see anyone trying to flip a GG watch?

GG's was "just a GMT" and a pp calendar, apparently.


What Patek did is quite reasonable: some Muslims orientate themselfs during  fastening period Ramadan to Mecca time.

Although not really "compulsory", as the local time (sunset and dawn) is the accepted time for "non-Mecca-Muslims".


Now, that a Muslim will sell this again (if I understand your usage of flip correctly) is very unlikely, if he once has got his hands on this one.

Also: it looks quite dapper, I can imagine, with the green dial.



But as I mentioned before: I, personally, see the close relationship of two big religious symbols in one watch as a very accomplished topic.


Your "clin d'oeil" is certainly also in this watch: I note this in the marketing aspect of this watch...

Maybe a Sunrise and Sunset Time would have been more useful for them, than a WT?

I think every " Mecca Muslim " knows what time it is in Mecca.

So, I don't see very well what's the point with this WT, which is therefore a LE...

But I may miss something, here.

Yes, Nicolas, maybe it is a thing that Muslim will "understand" best.

As much as I know about Muslim faith, it is during Ramadan "good to know" what time is in Mecca.

but one for mecca for sunrise/sunset would be also intersting.

 

just to clarify in the holy month of ramadan Muslims fast and break their fast based on their local time where they are located and not time specific to Mecca.

for example we break our fast in Saudi Arabia (for example) in Riyadh 30 min before Mecca does and sure enough ppl in Egypt after Mecca and so on...

 

as for me i wont pick this one up due to the colour scheme (dont favor green) which is the same reason i didnt like the GG as well.

 

a truely cool function which would realy serve Muslims well is if they create a complication based on the lunar months or days instead

... the same time and therefore not the same sunset/dawn.

Riyadh is ca. 7 degree further east than Mecca, and therefore dawn is approx. 28 min earlier in Riyadh.

Now, wheter the political or the astronomical time is used is something that I can not answer or wheter it is looked as "accurate" into this matter.

Still, as you are saying, a Mecca edition of the RO EdT would be something very interesting.


I find the AP RO EdT is one of the most desirable watches at the moment.

Only two drawbacks with this one: very, very complicated watch and therefore possibly could prone to malfunction.

Secondly: it is very individualized by the chosen place.

But: who can afford to buy such a watch can also afford to repair and maintain it.

And even on the used market it will not come cheap to buy and again: who can afford that can still afford to exchange the location.

Hello all I'm new here but been lurking around for quite some time.  Color is cool IMO (at least not as green as the sub C)... but clearly not for the majority.  Probably why  Patek made it a limited edition?

I agree that the blue is better.

Just hope that this will not be the start of unlimited limited edition runs of a very popular model  i.e. world time.

I really like the color of the dial but would need to see the color of the dial in person. I didn't know the significance of the green dial to Mecca, thank you for that info.
