i have a dilemma. At the moment i have both of these watches put aside me at my AD. Originally it was going to be the 5711 and then the wife said go for the 5980 as i know its the one that really sings to you. However i got a bit of a shock with some of the updated prices and now im wondering if the chrono version is worth almost double the price of the 5711. I love the thicker case of the chrono and feel its a sportier watch , however i don't really invisage using the chrono function very often. the 5711 is obviously a dressier / slimmer watch and really ticks most of the boxes other than the case thickness. Its a classic head over heart scenario and i love both pieces but the question i wish to ask my fellow purists , is the chrono worth the extra?? What would you guys do??

What I don't like, on the 5712, are the too large indexes, too green, too.

So, I would go for the 5980.

Now, my answer will not be as easy if I had to choose between the original Nautilus and the 5980...

The 598O, I learnt to appreciate it, as, in my opinion, it is a superb interpretation of the Nautilus, enhancing its sporty look, without loosing its spirit.

Yes, thicker and bigger, but trying it is adopting it... In my opinion, once again.

I've read with interest your growing fondness for the 5980 , Part of me says that with the way pateks are going price wise this could be my last chance to Procure a chrono, on the other hand the original design of the 5711 also appeals with money left over for a daytona or jlc chrono or similar

the 5711 is nice but its basic design has been around for 30 years and you will be able to pick one up if you need to in the future. the 5980 is a more recent upgrade and is the way to go if you can get your arms around the price. Just close your eyes and pull the trigger, you can do no wrong! I did it last year after thinking I wanted the classic 5711 but once you try the 5980 and feel the weight, you will be seduced. I am a sucker for Chronos but I never use the function other than to time my eggs! ;-) Plus, it is ok to keep the chrono running on the 5980 as your seconds hand as on this movement, the design makes it ok. Don't do it on your 5970!

i used my 5070 to time the steaks on the bbq once uopn a time so im no better. thanks for your input.

The 5980 really grows on you despite being thicker- a kind of classy sportiness which I do not know how else to express it but to encourage you to go for it!

As for the 5711, it is better suited for office wear under cuffs if that is what you are looking for in the first place. I decided to go for the rose gold version which simply enhances the look further.

That is exactly what I have done as well. I killed to get the 5980 when it came out. I was holding out forth RG 5712 which at the time was impossible to land and then my AD showed me the 5711RG. I out it on and took it on the spot. Later on I gave thought to making it a trio and tried on the 5712g. Decided no. The 5711 is subtle and great with a suit and a great black polo shirt. The 5980 swings both ways. Great with a light gray suit and great as sport. I travelled to Paris last year and ran into a gentleman atbthe spa. There he was in the pool eith the 5980. Fantastic. First in house chrono to boot. Go for both.

5980 is seductive and a pleasure to wear...

A very interesting movement that you could run the crono 24/7 without affecting the
accuracy of timekeeping....

Although thicker and heavier than the 5711, it feels great on the wrist...

One of the bases of the concept of the Nautilus is slenderness. Even if the 5980 is quite thin for a chronograph, I don't find this principle in the 5980. It is obviously a great watch but I find the 5711 more faithful to what has to be a Nautilus.

Anyway... you can't go wrong with any of these two.

with the blue dial , went and did the wrist test again and am certain its the right watch. i don't pick it up until august as to get the tax free deal i have to take it out of the country but thanks everyone for there input and i must say im surprised that the consensus was for the 5980 , i was expecting it to be the 5711.

... I do not regret it, I would do it again. If you also have the 5070, than go for the 5980. That way you cover all dress codes. 5711 overlaps quie a lot with 5070, in my opinion.
