Patek Philippe

I recently have an opportunity to acquire a (1) 5070R or (2) 5159J at similar price level.  Which one would you prefer?  Don't tell me to buy both as I cannot afford it.

5070R is a rare sought after classic, discontinued (?) but I am afaid its size is a tad too big at 42mm.  I also prefer auto watch with at least a date.  Is 5070 a grand complication?  Can anyone enlighten me on why 5070 has such good market value?

On the other hand, 5159J is a new model, very wearable, nicely proportioned, a grand complication perpetual with a retrograde date.  There is also an officer's style hunter case back.  Not as rare as 5070 maybe but it is a pleasure just to look at it from every angle.

Which one to take?

you've already set your heart on 5159. Follow your heart and you can't go wrong. Show us some pics when you've got your baby. 

of the ch27 lemania based running out , the other cal315 will have alot more longevity. anyway, they really very different watch...one QP, the other chrono. one 42mm vs 38mm.

I gave up my 5070P a while ago because I just couldn't quite get used to its size and, more importantly to me, what I perceived as a beautiful dial overpowered by a giant bezel.  I seem to be in a definite minority on this point, but I traded away what will arguably be a very valuable collector piece because I really wasn't enjoying wearing it as much as I thought I should.

On the other hand, I have had a 5159G for about a year and a half and it just makes me smile every time I put it on.

I second the sentiment from Steve - while there are rational reasons for the 5070, ultimately it is the watch that makes you "smile" when you put it on the most that will bring you the most happiness.  I have been very tempted by the 5159 - it really has it all plus a hinged case back!  But I'm a biased owner of a 5053G and because of the similar style and case back design as well as base movement, I've held back from the 5159.  If I were approaching the situation "clean" then the 5159 would be my choice.  All the best.

I would go for the PP5159 without  any second thoughts.

PP5070 only a chorograpgh whilst 5159  a perepetual calender.Function with more practical. 5070 boost a lemenia movement n personally I think it is alot of hype. Omegas boost of lemenia movements as well but not many give them any second look.

I settle for a 5059 (earlier version of 5159) and sold off my 5070R. No regrets.

I much prefer the perpetual calendar feature and while nice, the 5070 does not really do it for me. I think it is a lot of money for a chronograph only model and I personally am a lot more fascinated with how an entire perpetual calendar can be fit into a rather small space. I strongly suggest you get the 5159/5059.

5070p is not only rarer and better looking........ Imagine what your kids will think in 20 years time??????

Any thoughts of value, investment, and what your children will say, as somebody said in a respond, you should not consider.

That is more a marketing argument from PP.

You will not know what your children will think about watches ...


To answer your questions:

No, the 5070 is not a grande complication as the 5159 is!

The "strong" market value of the 5070 is only based on auction results of the past / early  PP chronos, in other words: it has become an speculation object.

The speculation might work, but most likely you will not see the "gain" in your lifetime.

As I already mentioned my objections about the movement ( also another fellow here too ) and the design, my choice without hesitation would be the 5159:

A grande complication par excellence, a pp calendar with a central second, a retrogade date, a HAND guilloche, officer's case... WHAT MORE CAN AN ENTHUSIAST ASK FOR ?

And: 38 mm very , very wearable.

Rarity ? : just saw this bird in a PP boutique so far.

So, let your heart choose as watches MOSTLY have nothing to do with logic or calculus!

But after this long respond and exhausting monologue I am famished!  :" Bernaise, have we any of these delicious raisins left ?"

And just for the record.......My comment is not marketing hype.......... My watch purchases whilst are to please me I also consider what will please my boys when I am gone...... And I know which they would thank me for......

My choice in that category of price would be the 5159 and this time even in WG, although I like YG and RG also very.

I would say the 5159 has got the edge over  Lange's Zeitwerk and that is now a very bold statement...

The 5070 is too large for me so I would gravitate elsewhere. The 5159 is a great watch, I personally prefer the 5059 dial, so that is where I would go. I consider the 5059/5159 to be a more desirable piece for its complications and remember, I would think it would be a pretty good bet that PP will at some point stop making the 5159 for something else.

Just consider this, having a piece in the collection is one thing, being able to wear it and feeling great about the watch is another. I believe you will have more satisfaction with something you can wear and enjoy, I know that I have.

5159. Unfortunately, this purchase of yours depends on whether you would want to go into a watch purchase with your thoughts/logically or with passion/emotions.

After all, indulging in watches, for me at least is an emotional matter. What tugs most at your heart should be the one that you spend wrist time with coming out of the shop. So boil it down to whether this be an emotional or logical purchase and you will have your answer, the correct one for you.
