Patek Philippe

Both being at same price levels, which one one should consider buying for collection, retention of value, wearability and rarity. I love both of them but in terms of value the pt watch is a no brainer but investment and rarity the 5070 is the winner. But still want your opinion on this.

5070 - lemania used by whole host of other manufacturers...VC, breguet, RD (cheapest i hear), all relatively cheaper then PP

5960p - modern chrono, annual calender, platinum

Im fortunate enough to own both of these pieces and to be honest I feel that they look feel and wear too different to choose one over the other. The 5070 wears very wide and flat to the wrist while the 5960 wears smaller but has a heavier, thicker case, which constantly reminds you that its on your wrist. I feel the 5070 just sort of disappears when you put it on.

I find myself wearing the 5960 the most, but still when I put on the 5070 something about it makes it feel more special to me.

Id think that one day in the near future the 5070 will be the more wanted piece between these two, but if I had to choose only one to wear and enjoy it would certainly be the 5960.

on what you already have in your collection and what you'll be adding in the future. And more importantly, at what you look for in your Patek collection.
I mean if you already own a 5980, 5070 add diversity, but 5960 completes your PP modern choron collection
or if you are going to get a 5970 / 5004, a 5960 add diversity, but 5070 completes your PP classic choron collection

From my observation, those who purchase 5070 do not really ask for opinion and never need a push to make their decision, they just know what they look for...
Unfortunately, between 5960 and 5070, I like the former which I guess doesn't retain as good value as the later due to its lower production run and some other reasons mentioned in previous threads, but 5070 just never sings to me!

The reason being that it has the added (and very useful) complication of the annual calendar. And of course if you are not using the 12 hour chronograph for timing it, you can use it as a second timezone.
It of course also has the first Patek Philippe in house chronograph movement.
Though Ihave to agree with the opinions of other members, that the 5070 will probably retain it's value better than the 5960.

I agree with Hororgasm's assessment and apparent preferences.  Don't you have a preference?  They are so completely different that I don't think of them in the same category.  the 5070 is a nicely oversized old-fashioned/classic chronograph with old-fashioned/classic fonts and dial markings and an old-fashioned/classic movement; it's competition in my eyes is the VC Malte Chrono., the AP Jules Audemars chrono., and the new Patek old-fashioned chrono.  The 5960P is arguably the finest modern and modern-looking chronograph on the market, and the only annual calendar 12-hour chronograph I know; it is peerless.

To me--the 5960P. I am biased as I own it. I went through the same process in buying it. It has a flyback and annual calendar vs. just a chrono and it is platinum. In fact to me the Lange Platinum Dato is a better watch to compare with the 5070 and it has a large date and flyback feature vs. just chrono. I actually think I prefer it to the 5070 in terms of looks and features etc.--I know not the thing to say on PP forum!! So--I say 5960P--once you have it on your wrist-you will not ever look back!!

The fact is you are considering two modern watches, one of which was recently discontinued.  The other factors, investment and rarity, you mentioned are questionable at this time, twenty or thirty years from now may more accurately measure those factors.

The responses you have gotten are personal preferences of one model vs. another and of the two, I prefer the 5070 cosmetically.  But, I prefer the size and looks of the new chronograph over the 5070 and I'm sure five years from now there will be still one or more different models to consider.

The purchase dilemma of one vs. another will always exist and with new pieces being introduced more and more frequently in seemingly controlled quantities, it makes you either buy them all or wish you had selected the "right" one for your collection. 

Thirty years ago, I don't believe Patek controlled the market as they seemingly do today. They were more than happy to build a 3450 for you, today appears to be another story altogether.  Pieces are launched in one color maybe two for a period of time, then those are discontinued for a third color for a year or two, and finally a fourth color is launched creating a frenzy of, will this be offered in rose gold or platinum? Will my dealer be in a position to get one for me?  I love the watch but would rather have leaf shape hands rather than pitched Dauphine hands, which if it isn't offered that way forget it, or hope and pray  they will at some point.  Those were not issues then, but certainly are factors today.  How will they affect investment and/or rarity?  It's a swag at best.

The 5960 is PP's first in-house chrono which is a milestone for them. Don't really care for the "look" of the 5960 unless it is the 5960P. Love that blue sunburst dial. Very sporty. Not so much a "dress" watch like the 5070, although i would wear it with a tux if I felt like it. The 5070 looks good with jeans or tux. Beautifully reworked Nouvelle Lemania movement. 5070 is discontinued. Investment? Perhaps the 5070 will retain a higher value but who knows? Whichever one you prefer, I hope neither are safe queens because the value really comes in the "pleasurable use" of the timepiece.

Two very similar watches but different at the same time.....

5960 is the modern face of PP while 5070 has a retro look...

5960 is the first in-house chrono for PP while 5070 is one of the last lemania
movements (refinished of course and none left for future use)

I think that you can wear them both as dress watches and with jeans....

It is a tough choice... True 5070 is no longer available but 5960 is not that easy to find
(both can be found in the second market)

It is difficult to choose between them- I actually think that they compliment
each other.... You cannot go wrong with either...
I would probably choose the 5969 (grey dial) as I find the sigle dial chrono fascinating.....

Valuewise.....well, you can never know.....
5960 is a bit more expensive.....
True 5070 seem to be rarer... but my gut feeling is that 5960 will became a classic....
At the end of the day, I would choose the one that I like the most and wear it more...
Besides the best value/bargain of a watch in the long term is the one you wear most
and get the most enjoyment with....

there will always be a perpetual chrono in the production line.

People who can afford and are willing to pay for a PP ppc will choose a new one from the AD.

Same applies to the 5960.

Wearability issue: not really austere watches, understated watches, both.

Not really combinable to a suit as far too big and thick.

If you still have got the irrational wish, that is actually all what drives us here to aquire watches of this caliber, than go for what you simply fancy best.

I have a Lemania based Patek chrono (actually perpetual) and the gold-color movement feels/looks much better than the steely 5960 movement which looks and acts like it ought to be buried unseen deep inside a Nautilus case, and manipulated with diving gloves.

For outside looks, all the Patek watches are definitely gorgeous in their class, and there can be no objective discussion anyway

While the 5070 is a beautiful piece--the 5960P movement(contrary to the last post) is quite nice and fits the case size perfectly. The 5070 movement on the other hand does not fit the case size and would have been much better suited in a 39 mm case vs 42mm. It is a beautiful movement but just seems so small in that rather large case. With that said- I would still like to have one in my collection but am quite happy with my 5960P !!
