Looking the pairing of say the 5146 and a 5960 gets you in a position to consider a 5070 (or the new chrono) and a Nautilus of some type, maybe a perpetual and a Nautilus, or still a representation of a simple calatrava, a Nautilus, and an annual calendar. Or, possibly consider just one special piece to get things rolling.
I have a 3970, which I seldom wear, a couple of chronos which I think look cool, but very rarely, if ever, use the chrono function and several simple watches which I gravitate to most of the time. That's me at this point in time. I can tell you though, when I bought my 3970 more than 20 years ago, I could not stop thinking about it until it was in my hands. That piece began the process of acquiring more. When I looked at which piece to buy, I didn't restrict myself based on money (even though it was a serious issue, believe me) but rather which piece I wanted more than any others available at the time (remember, there were no 5070's, no 5146's, no 5980's just basic watches and two perpetuals, 3940 and 3970) so I went with the big dog and got it out of the way first. And I am glad I did it that way.
Everyone has their own desires and advice of what they would do...which may be contrary to yours. The fact is, there are so many choices and combinations for you to consider and if you're reasonably young, there will be many other temptations coming your way. The watch companies will make sure of that.
5167+5960 vs 5146+5960 how would you choose...
If I am lucky enough to own a pair of Pateks, which combo would your consider and care to explain your choice:
5167 + 5960 (IMO: modern and diversified representation of PP, diversified price range, less historical references,
5146 + 5980 (IMO: distinctive function / movement, upgradable to 5140 when funds available)
5726 + 5130, 5146 + 5130, 5167 + 5159...any more combo suggestion is welcome

My choice was the 5960P + 5980, but I'm only into 12-hour chronos and these two are the only models Patek has ever made. I couldn't be happier with this pair, which cover all of my needs.
I suppose if I had to select a non-chrono from among those you list, it would be the 5146. I consider it the most modern variant of the round annual calendars.

Rather than having two, have you considered gettting just one killer
piece or you could split it up and buy more than two covering the simple, complicated, and maybe a steel Nautilus.

Getting the 3970 was an excellent move and should have cut your route short early.

A few month later, you might have learned more about others, or see more from SIHH or Basel...sillently shifted your values and budget allocation, and open yourself up to possibilities in higher caliber...and the cycle never ends!
Back to PP, the alternative 'one' could well be a 5140P or 5159G but I'm just not there yet to paid for the Perpetual premium or to appreciate 5159's roman numerals, in contrary 5960 offers a nice balance of classic and innovation which comes with a nice functionality package (which PP has successfully targeted younger watch lovers to taste PP's complication.)

interesting post. I would probably go for a 5146P (one of my favorite PP) + 5980 (or 5711 or 5712). I have not used or even held a 5980 so I am not sure how well that chronograph will work for me. If it works, great!, then a 5980 and 5146P. But if the 5980 does not work out, then another Nautilus that can be worn in sporty conditions and is not super fragile. I would need to try on the 5711 and 5712 since I have a small wrist and some watches just flood my wrist.

Agree--5960P is an amazing piece. You are getting a chrono--all on one wheel--with a flyback function as well as an annual calendar. It is platinum with the diamond--looks great--feels great. I am happy I went in that direction. On the other hand the 5146P is a great work watch that one can wear in jeans also if you please. Both are great watches--both platinum with diamond--both perfect balance and symmetry--both feel great as well---that platinum heft!!! Perfect duo IMHO.
5960R + 5712 1/A
I was making my own decision a couple of months ago with almost the same budget. Finally, I chose 5960R and 5712 1/A.
Functionally, I got annual calendar, chronograph, moon phase, and power-reserve. On the other hand, this combo means TWO complicated Patek watch: one gorgeous formal gold watch with a little sport feel, plus one steel sport watch with elegant taste. It means I could wear COMPLICATED PATEK WATCH all the time!
Just my humble two-cent.
