Why does Patek not return old dials?

Hello everybody...
...In the event of Patek changing (not restoring) a damaged dial on a watch, the company will not return the old dial they remove to its owner, this even in the case you request for your dial.
I can't think of any reason why this should be the case and think it is rather unfair on the owner, given that he/ she has paid for both dials, but has to give up one. The first dial is paid for when buying the watch, the second when getting it changed.... which isn't a cheap affair either.
In my case, I would like to change a dial, but would be most upset to lose the old one, for that holds sentimental value, having come down in my family from my forefathers.
I wonder if anyone knows or can provide good reason for this?
