Patek Philippe

Hi buddies,

If you can buy a 5078P, which dial would you choose?  As I did not see the black dial version personally...any one could give us his comment?

Also, I remember Jerome has seen both versions, could you give us your valuable opinion?

At least that's one question I ask myself endlessly without so far needing to answer! 

I know that I would order my 3939P with the white enamel dial (my 3939R too). I would not go black on this one!

Regarding your question I keep looking at the two versions of the 5078 and I'd better order the two of them, no less! Not very serious by the way!

The two watches are just awesome! I guess that if I could order first a white enamel 3939P I may be tempted to get a black dial 5078 then.

The 5959 looks probably slightly larger in white so white may be my favourite colour for this one!

And the best fourth one would probably be the black dial 5074P! Incredible sound of the cathedral gongs......

Don't ask about the 5016R and the 5013P, please! 

If you dislike white and black, don't forget the copper 5207!

Good luck and congratulations if you're seriously considering such beasts! They're IMO at the best of the current watch production!

honestly, my choice would have to be Enamel without any doubts.  Black lacquered dial may be rare, as less people may choose to order 5078 with this style dial, i think enamel dial is safer, due to time, age and oxidisation.  Enamel as we know can last for a long long time, whereas, lacquered dial may have discoloration, moisture may harm this form of dial in due time.  Recently, i had the chance to inspect a patek 3974yg, it has a special black lacquered dial with roman numerals, if you saw what i saw, you would be worried too.  That is just my opinion, at the end, its your preference that you should feel most comfortable with.

I don't have to worry about the enamel dial being crack during servicing or shock.
But the white dial looks alot nicer than the black one....sigh, no perfection.
Same as Jerome, I think 3939P, G, or R is my ultimate fav MR. It is manual wind and so sublime.
5016 is the king no doubt but I find its cocktail complication too much for a MR.
As for 5078P, with such beautiful crown, it's a shame that it is an automatic.
And, silly me, it takes me many years to even realise that it is an automatic. I was blinded by its beauty.

a minute repeater should not have too many complications as the would be no room for the chimes and gongs to reverberate. the metal also plays a determining role as to the clarity of the chimes and gongs. platinum is the worst metal for a minute repeater as it absorbs and dulls the sound. 5016p is a wonderful, and i love it, but when I listen to the gong I notice that the it sounds duller and less acoustic when compared to the 3939p. perhaps yellow gold would have been advisable as provides the cleanest minute repeater chimes and gongs....at least in my most humble of opinion.

I am the proud owner of both of these fantastic minute repeaters and feel enamel is classic while lacquer is the new guy in town.  So I go for enamel no question.  Sound wise the 5079J has the Cathedral Sound a real pleasure and different from other repeaters in its beautiful sound.  The 5078P has the classic sound only a Patek Philippe can achieve.

These small imperfections which are shown, not to say enhanced ,by a big macro make the charm of the enamel.

Very difficult tp ut in words ( or in pics ), indeed.

I would go for black. Aside from being a black dial fan, I do think that enamel dials are more fragile. I realize that repeaters are not meant to be worn while kayaking etc but there is something about a watch which screams fragile if installed with enamel dial and that alone diminishes the appeal, for me at least.

Having seen both in the metal only solidified my choice for black. Good luck in choosing!!!
