Hi All,
My dad is looking to buy me a Patek Philippe for my graduation present and for work experience that I have done.
He has given me budget of $30,000 to purchase Patek Philipe. Should i buy it from auction like antiquorum? Anyone had experience buying watch from them?
Thanks
IMHO, i think considering it's your first Patek, you shouldn't think of getting a 2nd hand, or from a grey mkt dealer. Maybe it's just me, but i have and am a firm believer that you should buy from an authorizd dealer (no matter how ruthless/bas****s they can get!). That said, 30k wouldn't get you far buying a patek, but it also dosen't mean it won't get you anywhere!
i guess it's really up to you, find out which Patek suits you best? If you have to do loads of black tie events, maybe something more classy, a calatrava? but if you've got a job which is quite in the sun/hard hitting, a nautilus? a banker or someone who has to liason with international markets? a world timer no doubt. but what i can say is wearing a patek to work when you boss is just wearing an omega isn't something i recommend! :P
Well, considering it's a first patek, you should really cherish it, think carefully of what you want? it's really a milestone in my opinion! something like once you get it, you'd forever look back and not regret! you want the first one to be perfect! don't be too 'miser' or 'cheap' yet regret later on!
all said, i wish you the best, and really hope you let us know what you settle for!
For a memorial/milestone related gift like that I would always buy something representative of "your time" .. now. So that means a new/current model. Best watch under 30k?.. I'd suggest the 5127. Perfect embodiment of the brand, everyday wearer, timeless interpretation of a classic model, in your era.

Don't take it wrong, but its never a good buy to get something jst for its tag. Easier to tell him, that you will take a tour at a shop that sells several high end brands, and see what watch you really like, and it might cost less then 30,000$. My advice, don't buy it jst cuz its a patek. If u do, and then with time, u start hating looking at ur wrist, u will regret listening to your father.
and good luck in your search. "pretentious"
The whole tone is a little too strange for me!
Just my 2c( I don't have $30k)

I am looking for dress watch, since most of my current watch are all sporty. I curentlly own Panerai Pam 232, 26 (comming hopefully this December), Breitling Chronomat, Corum Bubble Bat and Jaeger Le coultre Reverso Sun and Day. Im curentlly eying for either 5196 , 5296 or the 6000. What are your thought on those pieces? However I like the 5130 very much, how much is the RRP for the 5130 in Rose Gold? I might sell some of my watch to top up so i can get the 5130R.
Thanks
if it is truly to be an heirloom would be the classic lines of the 5124G. Its got the new movement and its really a fine watch, and truly will become classic. Have your Dad put the rest in a beaten down basket of bonds for your future
I may get flamed but here goes with my view. You are wasting your time on a new Calatrava and any of the Annual Calender range, their value retention is not good in these times, and their prices too "reachable". With your modest hierloom piece and when finances permit , you will aspire to own a Perpetual Calender , Lemania Chrono or eventually a Minute Repeater. Those are much more than 30k but they retain their value because of exclusivity.
The reason I say this, is I would hate for your Dad to shell out 30k only to have it depreciate by 1/2. Better to take baby steps with a 16k patek that in my view is really well recieved and in demand.
They are classic, discontinued models, and IMHO, much better versions of the 5712.
Just my 2 cents,
Larry
