Where did you get the mistaken idea that the 5135 with a grey dial is less then desirable???
I have owned several Pateks and, in determining my next, came across the 5135 with a grey dial. A fantastic looking piece that, for many, is the best looking Patek in the current lineup. The case is gorgeous. Smooth curves, a grey/silver dial that glistens under the sunlight, and a rotor that gently purrs with movement.
The size is perfect for a medium or larger wrist. And I think it is the cat's meow with the brown strap that will be attached to the piece when you purchase it! From blue jeans to a dark suit, this watch is comfortably at home however you dress.
The 5135 combines the best of a retro look with a contemporary piece. I can choose any new Patek and this is the one that adorns my wrist... and the new movement is wonderful as well

Before I mention anything....................5040 is an impeccable watch. It is one of my favorites. I do accept the fact that it is small.
But I think that smallness causes major appeal, forget today's standards. You are thinking that way because of your recent Panerai history.
Large watches became popular today but it will change tomorrow.
Try to look at it once again from a different point of view as well. 5040 is a life long watch.
I have a small wrist, I have seen someone wearing one with a large wrist and it just looks amazing.
Please reconsider.
Trust me on this I have had 44mm panerais, 47mm 1950, AP Montoya.
I don't like to wear big watches anymore. Also, I am almost married to PP only.
I am not a big fan of 5135 because of its shape only. I can highly suggest 5146R, which is very new collection of 2008. The prices should be close between the two.
If the cost is not an issue, my list is pretty large; among the ones you mentioned:
I am more in favor of a 5960 rather than 5070.
If I were you; Locate a 5040 you like, also order a 5960 from the same dealer. It will take some time for the 5960 to arrive anyway.
That is a great way to start
Then slowly, we will pull you into our Nautilus section where you will post another "debate" you will have, about which one to pick.

5135r was my first Patek as well and the beggining of the destruction of my bank balance....lololol
Lovely watch. Seats well on the wrist (i have a big wrist), it is very legible and immaculate quality like all Patek. After that followed a 5070w, a 5167a and last but not least a 5712 r.........when is it going to end ...i dont know...
all i can say in terms of wearability first comes the 5167a then 5135r and if i didnt have a 5135 i would go and buy one.

About to leap on a 5135 grey dial...Newbie needs help!!
I'm a recovering Panerai addict and about to make my very first Patek purchase. The model I am considering is 5135 in a grey dial. I would like to invite any opinions on this model be they negative or positive.
From my limited experience so far in shopping for Pateks and from monitoring this site it goes without saying that Pateks in general are not easy to find which brings me to my curiousity/paranoia of why the 5135 is available right now to a mere newbie like myslef. To put it differently, is the 5135 seen as a less desirable model by you guys due to the shape or perhaps is the grey face 5135 less desirebale than the more conventional white face 5135 models? HELP!

I have a large wrist...and almost always have to get extra-long straps. Where did you get your gray strap?

When I saw pictures of it, I just had to have it... however, when I saw it in the metal and tried it on, was waaaay too big for my small wrist. If I just collected watches, I may have picked it up, But, since I wear what I buy, it was just too big for me.

Buy it if you really like it....
if you think it is "relatively easy to get" may stop you from buying it, then I suggest you buy something else (maybe 5712, 5960...etc). I bought the 5135 because I like it, not because it is "hard to get".....agree?

what about 5070?

I would like to get your opinion since you mention 5135 is abit big among the PPs. Do you think 5070 and 5970 are also too big as a Patek? I find that most of the comments about the 5135 is regarding its huge size but the same person (not you) thinks that 5070 is their ultimate perfect Patek....quite contradict in my opinion. I think 5070 is too big but the 5135 is proportionally correct (5040 is way too small as a watch in todays standard). What do you think? Thanks

agree with you...
.... I myself has nothing against 5040 or any other Pateks. My whole point is that Patek is a watch company that produces different sizes of watches to fulfil their customers' need. There should not be a stereotype of Pateks. I myself enjoy Pateks whether they are big or small..in fact my all time favourite are still 5135 and 3998 which are both very different in sizes.....

5070 looks large but I could wear it! In fact I'd love to wear it! It is not excessive.

Regarding looks, the 5070R is perhaps the most appealing (to me) recent PP. I prefer the 5970 case but the cleaner 5070 dial wins the match over 5970.
5070 is pure and really beautiful! The 5070P is very beautiful too.
Regarding 5070G to be honest I don't remember ever seeing it, or perhaps a few years back at Basel in a window! That doesn't count for making an opinion.

5135 uncomfortable to wear.
I like the look, but I find this watch to be uncomfortable. The 5146 is more wearable. The 5140 is the most wearable of all, but a lot more expensive.
