This very watch was part of the John Thompson collection of twenty one Patek repeaters . . .
. . . that I not only saw in person fifteen years ago but actually held in my hands. Thompson shared his whole collection with a group of collectors at a private event in Nor Cal to which I was invited.
My recollection is that this black dial with red accents was (and perhaps still is) a piece unique ordered by a customer. I can't remember who the customer was; it may have been Thompson himself.
At any rate, of the twenty one on display that afternoon in Santa Clara, the only one I can recall now is this particular example. It was that compelling.

. . . he also set a more than a few of them chiming. You could almost say the event was a concert with the Patek Philharmonic.

John Thompson's PP repeater collection viewing was attended by at least forty aficionados . . .
. . . from around the country and perhaps even overseas. I believe it was held in 2005 (not 2007 as first reported) in Sun Micro's offices in Santa Clara. Besides myself from this site, Thomas M, Alan, and Larry Seiden were there. Kohei from TimeZone was there, as was another TZ moderator whose name escapes me.
I didn't have a camera back then so no pics in my files, sad to say.
