Patek Philippe 5172G Chronograph
A new white-gold case and blue dial
The first chronograph of classic architecture for men endowed with a movement entirely developed and manufactured by Patek Philippe, Ref. 5170 (2010) appeared successively in yellow, white and rose gold, and in platinum.
The manufacture has now redesigned this emblema- tic model coveted by collectors, endowing it with a new, fully polished white-gold case with round guilloched pushers and three-tier lugs. Its subtle vintage touch is underscored by a cambered sapphire-crystal “box” glass extending across the bezel.
The dial is also sporting an all-new look with a blue background and contrasting white-gold applied Arabic numerals highlighted with a luminescent coating, white-gold baton-style hour and minute hands with pointed tips, also luminescent, a sandblasted central chrono- graph hand and a white, transfer-printed minute counter with its tachymeter scale – to which must be added the two railway-track scales encircling the small seconds and the chronograph’s 30-minute counter. All has been planned to ensure perfect legibility, whether in daylight or the dark.

The new Ref. 5172G-001 in white gold is worn on a hand-stitched calfskin strap in a shade of navy blue to match the dial, with a white- gold fold-over clasp. It replaces the previous Ref. 5170P-001 in platinum.
I like this and more refined case designs in general but this is nothing new as it's almost the very same as the 5320G. [nt]
It does not fit very well for the chronograph.

...though of course have not had the 5172 on the wrist...so could be open to having my mind changed.

(takes some time let this one sink in) I think it's an absolute killer.
The sportiest pure chronograph ever produced by Patek...
I hope the case is thicker to allow for the mm increase, but this looks good.

Nice review of an interesting successor of the 5170! I'll able to see the new collection in person only in late May, so I'm looking forward to many wristshots from those lucky enough to make it to Basel :-)

Still not fully convinced, but I'm starting to like it more.
Is it 42mm? A bit too big IMO...
I initially disliked the round pushers, and would have preferred rectangular pushers...but perhaps that would not have looked good with the case style--I'm not sure.
The case work certainly looks nice, and very well detailed, but I think the lugs are maybe over-designed.
It's certainly more distinctive than the very plain 5170 (initial release with Roman numerals).

I will wait to see it in the metal....I like the new case, the pushers, but I have some doubts on the dial ( which is an awkward blend of classicism and modernity ) and the hands.
Are the indices luminous?

IMHO I think PP is
slowly moving from the ‘seriously classic / dressy’ to more ‘youthful’ take on the chrono - May be the blue makes me think so ?!

5070 was not very formal either?
I think this one has flaws that we will learn to appreciate, much like the 5070, and as opposed to the 5170 that was flawless, but lacked a bit of charm

diamnonds on markers make it very unisex and not surprise that many women like this more than men. grey market prices for something produced for so little period show just how flawless is it. can find it at huge deiscount very easily.
