5170P vs 5070P
Well, I was in Basel this afternoon and "examined" the 5170P from the showcase window. It's a nice chronograph, I have to say, maybe the nicest among all 5170s, for my taste.
Since the diamond indexes are thin and decently applied, you don't really see them as a big "issue". I'm not a diamond watch fan, but I can tolerate with the diamond indexes in this style.
Well, if I wouldn't have to consider the financial restraints, I'd like to own one. But if I have to choose between 5070P and 5170P, I would still pick the 5070P, for dial layout, gorgeous case shape and also the old-fashioned movement reasons.
It's nice to own a couple of nice watches
because at one stage life becomes cheap.
No sense to buy whatces which are not nicer than the old ones.

5070 for me too.
The case design of the 5170 leaves a lot to be desired for me. It's flat, with 21mm lugs, and the dial sits far from the crystal. Along with the sub dials below the equator the watch lacks the coherence of a chrono. The new dial layout is a bit better but not enough for me. The 5070 has soul, no other way to put it. It sings on the wrist. The movement's too small for the case but it doesn't really affect the watch's character.

The 5170 P is technically superior, smaller in size and hence more classic and a much darker, in terms of mood, watch than the 5070, wich I find very, very appealing!
And it has got diamonds on the dial, wich I like also a lot.
The 5070 P is a name in the watch world, a good sized chrono with a lovely blue face.
However, I feel drawn more toward this new 5170 P because of the dark mood.

I believe the diamond markers on the 5170P are subtle and actually suit the watch. Yes it means a higher price unfortunately, but it actually adds class to the watch rather than taking class over from it. For most of us, psychologically if we hear diamonds on a watch, it will be an immediate no but if you did see the 5711P (anniversary piece) in the flesh, you may agree that if you had not been told that the markers were in diamonds, you would just have admired the watch for what it was without prejudice.
Also note that the photos on this forum are a close up so the diamond markers look more distinctive than they otherwise would when you were wearing the watch.

The 5170p imho trumps all other 5170s no doubt.
Let me start by saying that I have never purchased a watch with diamonds on the dial or the bezel, however , the diamond indexes on the 5170p imo are understated as far as diamonds on a patek go and they add balance to the sunken registers beautifully. If the registers were properly aligned at 3 and 9 the indexes at 10 and 2 would be shorter. The way it is now the indexes seem to hold the registers in place and as such create a harmony that wouldn't exist if the registers were placed differently. With the breguet numerals the registers don't look as nice as on this dial.
Just my opinion
As far as the 5170 vs 5070 debate goes, 42mm is too big for my wrist but 39.4mm is as big a watch as I could possibly feel comfortable wearing. Therefore 5170 works better for me.
On a final note I find the 5170 to be extremely elegant, more so than the 5070 in size and style. This is something that appeals to me personally.

who has physically seen and tried on the 5170P to say that it is not superior to the 5070P. I was at Basel yesterday and had the opportunity to do both and am now deliberating what I can sell to acquire this watch! It is not just a watch, it is a work or art and I am not even into chronographs. The dial is beyond words as it changes colour depending on the light. To say it is blue in colour would not be accurate The combination of the tachymeter scale, the colour of the dial and the diamonds (which I am not normally keen on) will elevate the 5170P to legendary status in no time.
Even when seeing the pictures, I knew the 5170P is superior!!!
Good thing for me: in september 2015 contacted my AD and mentioned to put me on list if 5170P ever came out. He immadiately replied that I was on 1st spot. Luckily I kept his mail and forwarder him back after announcement of the watch! is for me as you say a true work of art!

I beg to differ.But i do think there is nothing to be gained by arguing one is "better" than another. I don't really know what "better" means. In the same way that someone can argue that a Lexus is "better" than an Aston DB5, another argument can be made to the contrary.
I think both watches have someting special. For me...and my personal taste, the 5070P is my choice. It is not "better" than someone else's choice...its just different.
I do wish we could move teh dicussion to look at the two watches as "both" fabulous in their own ways....rather than one being "better" than the other.

Well, I think this post's title
was whether the 5170P was better than the 5070P and therefore it is aimed at being a contest. Better would be in the categories of movement finishing, size of movement in relation to case, size of case, beauty of dial, accuracy, balance of watch taking into account diameter and height. Based on all these, my vote goes to the 5170P.
A Lexus is more reliable, is cheaper to maintain and consumes less petrol than a DB5 but the latter has more character, is a better investment and is a prettier car.
I believe one can compare anything if you have set areas of comparison.

The post was deliberately provocative....but in the end I think its a futile objective. You love teh 5170P. I love the 5070P. What have we actually learnt from that? Is it that the 5170P is better? Or is the 5070P better? All we have learnt is that we have different taste.
Ultimately, of course, the laws of supply and demand have a way of evaluating a "winner", but in this instance, I am not sure Mr. Market has any bearing at all on what is the "better" watch.

and I can tell you like a product with soul! I shall be selling the Aston in early April and will decide whether or not to opt for the Patek 5170P (yes I like it that much) or the Grönefeld Remontoire which is a quite special and to me, tremendous value for money especially in steel
