Patek Philippe

I am due to retire in April next year but today, I tried on a watch that may make me postpone my retirement for another three months (any excuse to keep on working!). I have always liked the cushion shaped case of the 5940G, the allure of the Arabic numerals, the slimness of the case housing the attractive 240Q movement and I was quite surprised when Patek decided to discontinue the model after only two years in production (2014-2016). Surely two years in production is far too short for any model so either this watch will be very sought after in future or it will disappear into oblivion . The earlier yellow gold model differs not only due to the metal but it spots a railway minute track whereas the white gold models have lovely dots to indicate the minutes which I personally find more attractive. Most importantly, this watch today has passed the most important test in my opinion - it seems to suit my wrist perfectly. A penny for your thoughts

I had thought it would be large but it fits perfectly. I like the legibility. It is definitely my next purchase. The only negative is the tonneau shaped case is not very popular. Round watches are the norm.  Remember the 3970 in this case were terrible sellers when in the line up. Now they are highly sought after collectibles due to their limited production.

...in any metal but yellow gold looks better on me. I love it because of its shape and slimness. The only thing that would make it perfect would be a shaped movement to fit the case but that will never happen...buy it!!

I think we like it for the same reasons!

Pateks tend to hold their value or appreciate when there are produced in limited numbers, a short time span rather than if they are popular. If you are serious about this watch, you should not wait too long since the last watch is about to leave Geneva for London, allegedly reserved for me while I decide what to do! Saying that there are a few dealers who still have this watch so all is not lost. The watch is a 37mm watch and although the official dimensions are 37 x 44, the 44mm includes the lugs. Not many manufacturers can produce a 37mm perpetual calendar with a thickness of 8.6mm. I am sure if you do buy it you will have no regret despite the general preference for round watches. This watch is a bit special because it is not round but still remains very balanced!

In the case of retiring, I vote for earlier rather than later - I was sitting in the top seat at my company and wish I'd gotten out sooner.

as I actually love my job and the company so when I do finally retire, something in me will die too regrettably. I am only in the UK because of the love for the job and I intend to return home to Malaysia shortly after. However, my tiny watch collection will keep me smiling for many years to come.

I was head of R&D at one firm, and when I left they packed my entire office into boxes and put it in storage. The "new guy" who had worked for me for several years managed to grab a few things, but everything else disappeared and no one really cared, or missed my projects. They funded his but ignored most of them too. 

and will probably perform even better as I have been a dinosaur. I have been with the company for 25 years and it has been my only real job so you can imagine the affinity with the company. I guess the ethos of the company has been largely derived by own personal ethos - the main aim of the business is to make the staff happy, rather than to maximise profits! Indirectly a satisfied workforce performs better

The tonneau shaped case is what makes it stands above the norm.

and the Arabic numerals do add to its discreet elegance

Well all numerals are Arabic unless they happen to be Roman or in same cases written in a different language. It's based on the Arabic numeral system. Within that you would get different calligraphic fonts I would guess.

I should have stated Breguet numerals and not Arabic numerals which are more general.

watch does not have the extra solid case back or the deployant clasp typical supplied on Patek "Grand Complications". Why I really do not know.

Well done! I will be having discussions with my bosses tomorrow to know if my retirement extension is possible. The watch should come with an extra solid back but not the deployant clasp and to be honest, I prefer the pin buckle. I hope it comes with a Patek winder though!

In your shoes, I'd postpone retirement three months and buy the watch.

A dealer offered me a great price on the yellow gold model and I passed because of the metal and an allegiance to chronographs, but I haven't been able to get this reference out of my mind because of the wonderful slimness, great fit, and unusual but understated shape and size.  As I've learned more about the reference, it's become my favorite non-chronograph perpetual ever.

I hope you go for it and share lots more photos.

It is my favourite Patek currently(bar the minute repeaters) and I have never owned a perpetual calendar so this might be it. I have tried to like the 3940 or 5140 but somehow the connection was not there! I always compare the attraction and chemistry to a watch with that to a woman (my apology in advance to the women readers here). Sometimes when it feels right, it may be quite difficult to explain why and logic goes out of the window. In this particular case however, even logic seems to say that the 5940G is a keeper

Is the Quintessential Patek Philippe, i say go for it you will never regret it, this case is really unique i myself prefer the black dial but i can see the white being more versatile.  congratulations on the retirement. cheers.

The watch look discreet enough to be a daily wear and thank goodness that I only have three other watches to alternate with (on of which is still embarrassingly sealed!)
I never could decide if the perpetual calendar was the quintessential Patek or if the perpetual calendar chronograph is more deserving of the title!
