There are old models which are beautiful indeed, the original ones and most of them have evolved. The problem is finding the good improvement and not going the wrong way of course.

Then, if you add the subjectivity of all that is aesthetical, then what is the right move? Hard to tell really.

I love the 3700 as well, was not fan f the 3710 ("comet") and like the 5711 very much. Size, thickness, style standards are different from a decade to another.

Is the right move not moving from the 3700? Or is it right to bring novelty in creating evolutions (as long as they are nice for the current tastes when it is sold).

There is no real and easy answer or recipe to that.

The problem is that I'm not sure the 3700 is the absolute reference (even if I like it a lot and am very impressed with its thinness). I think the 5711 can be so as well in a time when watches have reached another standard size.

2 or 3 parts? I must say I don't care, unless it is the only way to make in thin and if we want a thinner watch. But some people prefer a watch a little thicker because more masculin and more sporty.

No absolute truth to me, the the difficulty to discuss about these matters.

Everyone finds what he wants, in the collection he likes and at the period of history that suits his tastes.

The 40th collection is not meant to be a symbol of what the Nautilus has been, the best of the references but only an exercize to celebrate anevent the brand doesn't want to be to visible. They seem to have decided, in addition, to make a very unusual choice, for a very small part of the customers. You can see, even here in a forum where most opinions expressed are very conservative and traditional, that some like what has been done with the baguettes or the size (not the 40th embossed).

So very hard to say that the 3700 was the only way to go.

I personally prefer the 5711 to the 3700 in terms of buckle design, style and quality, for the crown design and dimensions. And I prefer the dial of the 3700's dial and its thinness if this is what we want.

You say the case was distorted, other say it improved. I won't say who is right as I don't think there is a right answer.

Yes, a very thin and clean version would have been great indeed, maybe they wanted to keep it for later (50th)? We have time

it looks like a tombstone: Here lies Patek Philippe Nautilus, born 1976, died 2016 at age 40. There are better was to indicate that it's the 40 Anv. IMHO

It really made me laugh and unfortunately I have to agree with that

I am very disappointed with these anniversary models.
The chrono is simply too big and the 5711 in platinum, to me, goes against what nautilus was/is, which is a sort of sporty watch. I mean who will treat their eur 100k purchase in that manner.
The lettering on the dial, IMHO, is a travesty of epic proportions. Even though I was looking forward to getting a 40th, It is real easy for me to skip this one.

First whatever we say I think that both watches will sell well. For a full platinum piece LE the price is okay (it is priced less than the Omega Speedmaster all platinum) so it will be a good seller. 

An important element to consider, limited edition or not, is the price. Is it priced like the standard collection (at same material of course) or higher: it is the same price.

like when Lange issued the 1815 F.A. Lange Anniversary I was thrilled as it was priced "reasonably" and I was lucky enough to get one. Yet many Lange lovers were disappointed as the simple approach was seen as a shortcut..too simple. I guess is difficult to make something commemorative that is exciting yet not priced on the higher range.
My feeling is that perhaps -- in the metal -- the anniversary stamp won't be as prominent and the watch will sell well anyway. I understand how many Patek lovers are disappointed but ..I think that after the shock all will be fine

and I had the same reaction with the 1815 and with the recent RL Pour le Merite: I love them both becasue I think they are very nice offers and watches that appeal to me.

Something more than 1815? Yes but more expensive then and lower numbers etc...

No enamel dial on the RL PLM? Yes but I don't care the watch is fantastic: beautiful dial, even if I still have to see it in the metal and very interesting movement. That's a great watch for a smaller fee than the two previous versions.

Everyone has its own goal and checklist.

I think that all will be forgotten in a few months and that the clients who like them will be thrilled, so I can't say I'm not happy with the outcome even if I would have done it differently.

No Patek should ever deserve to be on the receiving end of this. C'mon Patek, issue us a "comeback round!"

I am glad there is nothing there to tempt me as I have neither the fund nor the wrist (for the chrono "clock"!). Good luck to those that have one or both of those requirements for these pieces.

Some clients will be highly interested by this watch and it is nice if they get it.

As you know Pt is much harder than gold to work (machine wear, speed of the tools must be adapted in order to take off slighter pieces of material etc...).

There is a lot of Pt in that bracelet and this is a major reason why such price.

The industry has a vested interest in maintaining Platinum's mythical properties in the eyes of the unknowledgable.
Grade 5 Titanium (annealed) is harder than all materials used, except if Rolex uses full hardened 904 — otherwise it's not much different to 316L.
The cutting bits are probably Titanium Nitride coated, which gives them a hardness value at least 8-10x that of the material being machined.

but how it behaves when you try to shape it with the tools they use. It is not as clean as crafting onto steel. Furthermore, the balance setting of the heavy weight was much more difficult than just adapting Pt to a 5711's design.

That's why it is very hard to adapt Pt to the 5726 and 5980 for instance.

Just for a few pieces, is not the same thing that selling thousands over the years.

Of course the image on Pt is part of the price building too.

from the ones getting pieces from the standard collection. The difficulty to talk to every clients from every parts of the world at the same time. There will always be someone in disagreement somewhere, especially when dealing with diamond-set watches.

Not for me either but I can understand the aim. Just hoping it will remain rare (which is right now as diamond-set watches are quite discreet from Patek's colelction).
