Does anyone know how many ounces of platinum are in the case of a Datograph?  I was holding a friend's Datograph, and was surprised how heavy it seemed.  Of course, platinum is one of the heaviest metals around, but cases of other platinum watches don't seem to use as much platinum.

I can't answer to your question but Lange watches weight a lot because :

- the case is quite thick but ALSO
- the movements are heavy too.

that the Platinum Datograph weighed approximately 150 grams when fitted with strap and standard tang buckle.  It's a hefty weight for a 39.5mm case, but feels quite nice and reassuring when on the wrist.

As an interesting aside, assuming USD $2000 per troy ounce of platinum, the scrap metal value of the Datograph is somewhere in the neighborhood of $9500 if you discount the weight of the movement, crystal and strap!

Thanks for the information.  At 150 grams, that's roughly 5 troy ounces (31.1 grams/troy ounce).  Somewhere between 1 troy ounce and 1.5 troy ounces seems right for all the non-platinum parts, so that's roughly between 3.5 troy ounces and 4 troy ounces of platinum, which is worth as raw material between $7,000 and $8000, at  roughly $2000 per troy ounce.  Of course, that doesn't take into account the cost of  fabricating and polishing the case, plus costs of running the business, and profits.  But typically platinum is marked up 10 times the cost of raw materials, so Lange clearly does not overcharge for precious metals the way some brands do.
