My hearing is lousy, and both metals do chime softly. The PT version (which I own) sounded softer than the gold version (which I don't own) when I compared them many years ago, soon after they were introduced.
That said, the Striking Time embodies an immensely practical complication for owners who sit in meetings. Its soft chime, every 15 minutes, gently reminds but never disturbs.
The best part is at night. On a quiet night, I can often hear the soft chime from far across the room before falling asleep.
On the reverse side, the unusual movement is compelling. Aesthetically, I like the elements that got removed with the (really fantastic) technical improvements of subsequent ZW movements -- the Maltese cross stopworks atop the barrel, and the asymmetric/shaped remontoir bridge, which fit nicely with the rest of the movement's asymmetry.
