I think that in terms of chronographs, it took a very important place in the horological landscape. The Lange One is a strong reference, but the Datograph has a stronger place, in my opinion. [nt]

So many strong characters that obliterate other chronograph. Even the date which I usually hate is awesome in Datograph.
The Date is essential in the DATOgraph. It is part of its name, and of its identity, the balance of the dial, too.
Look at the 1815 Chrono... If the sub dials were aligned in the middle of the dial in a 3 / 9 o clock line, it would be perfect for me.
Now, when you look at a 1815 Chrono, you always wonder why:
1/ The sub dials are not on this 3 / 9 line,
2/ Where is the date.

I never tried one on but I even found the Lange 1 a tad too big for me, so not to mention about Datograph with it's thickness... :( [nt]

The Lange 1 is an iconic watch for Lange, but it does not hold much weight in the world of horology. The 1st generation Datograph in my opinion was an extraordinary achievement and remains the finest chronograph ever made from all facets. Some argue the latest generation PP 5170 competes and despite the fact I'm a very big fan of the 5170, nothing stirs the soul more than the Datograph movement and finishing.
The same can't be said for the Double Split, although an immensely beautiful and intricate movement, not to mention the first ever double Rattrapante, the 5370P is an overall more desirable timepiece.

I totally agree, with all your points, if you allow me this replication. The Dato movement is at the top with a few others, in terms of decoration.
The Patek cannot beat it.

The 5170 competes in terms of technical refinement, not decoration
On a glance with both side by side, the Lange definitely pleases aesthetically compared to the relatively "mundane" 5170. However, credit where its due for the 5170's technical innovations that makes it somewhat interesting upclose (albeit, relatively minor. When we talk about watches in this realm, its really more about what is visibly attractive!). Also, the 5170 comes in a much thinner, svelte package that some may prefer over the Dato or 1815 chrono.

For me, the most iconic Lange is the Lange 1. But the Dato is an iconic timepiece in the Lange collection without doubt

For me, it is THE Lange icon
true the Lange 1 came first, but the Datograph was a real breakthrough and one if the not the best Chronograph with a movement to die for.

THE icon is the Lange One since it is the rebirth watch still in the collection.

The question is to know what defines an icon.
And for me it is not the horological content. It is a question of impact. Impact for the brand, impact on the audience, impact on the collectors. And there is no Lange watch with a bigger impact than the Lange One because it is the foundation watch still in the catalogue. Without the success of the Lange One, the Lange story wouldn't have been the same.
