📖 About This Reference

The Daytona reference 116520 represents a significant evolution within the Cosmograph Daytona line, being the first to feature Rolex's in-house developed chronograph movement. This reference marked a departure from previous models that utilized outsourced calibers, establishing a new benchmark for the brand's commitment to vertical integration and precision engineering in its sports watch offerings. It maintained the classic Daytona aesthetic while introducing subtle refinements. The watch is presented in a 40mm Oystersteel case, featuring a fixed tachymeter bezel also crafted from Oystersteel. Powering the timepiece is the automatic Caliber 4130, a self-winding mechanical chronograph movement known for its robust construction and a substantial power reserve of 72 hours. A scratch-resistant sapphire crystal protects the dial, and the watch is water-resistant to a depth of 100 meters, ensuring durability and functionality. Appealing to collectors interested in the technical advancements of Rolex, the 116520 is recognized for its role in the brand's history of movement development. It is available with either a white or black dial, both featuring contrasting sub-dials that enhance legibility and visual interest. The reference was produced for a considerable period, making it a recognizable and sought-after model for those appreciating the blend of traditional design with modern horological innovation.

Wearing this today. I much prefer the steel bezel than the ceramic one. In fact, I’ve come to rather dislike ceramic bezels as they tend to be fragile and bulky.

Mixed feelings for Daytona 116500LN...
Daytona. I wanted it so badly when it was launched back in 2016, but the hype and therefore waitlist made it impossible and so...I move on. Fast forward to 2020 and I was presented the opportunity to purchase the 116500LN at MSRP. The love is no longer as strong, I took it nonetheless. I am still un

116520 on leather strap?
Folks, I've been looking at the Rubber B option for my 116520 (Black dial) but I was wondering if there's a tasteful way (and good company) to install a nice black or brown leather strap. Has anyone looked into this? Thanks! Best, Robert

I am thrilled to admit I was mistaken. I adhered to the general (mis)conception that the black dials on 116500 and 116520 are exactly the same. Not true!
When the 116500 ceramic steel Daytona was introduced in 2016 I was thunderstruck by its beauty. For me it was the absolutely perfect modern sports Rolex and a very worthy heir to the 6263. However, one thing bothered me a lot. I thought, couldn’t Rolex have bothered to make a least some changes to t

When less is more... Part III
To continue my saga of vintage Rollies, I obviously could not go further without a Daytona. The question would then be which one… : the 16520 carrying the famous 4030 movement derived from the Zenith El Primero ? or its successor 116520 having the in-house movement 4130 ? Or maybe the latest 116500
