Description

This is the prototype Aquanaut and was produced in a limited quantity of 1000 pieces. The differences between this first version Aquanaut and the later models are that this model of Aquanaut has a solid case back and the numbers used for the date are serif. Movement used is Patek Philippe self-winding Caliber 330 SC which has a 21K un-directional rotor. Sweep seconds and date. Patek Philippe patented gyromax balance-wheel. As usual the high quality of Patek Philippe mechanical movements is evidenced by the Geneva Seal hallmark. Screw-down crown and case back. Water-resistant to 120 meters. Diameter is 36mm. Fitted on this Patek Philippe Aquanaut is a stainless steel Aquanaut bracelet, which I purchased separately for about US$2,000. Come with the package is a brand new “Tropical” strap with Patek Philippe steel folding clasp, embossed with the Calatrava Cross. Watch was just collected back from Patek Philippe Service Centre last week, hence it is under Patek Philippe's 1 year repair guarantee (servicing including replacement of the Tropical strap cost me US$1435).

📖 About This Reference

The reference 5060 is a significant early iteration of the Aquanaut line, introduced in 1997. This model marked Patek Philippe's venture into a more contemporary, sport-oriented design, distinct from its established dress watch collections. It was presented as a robust yet refined timepiece, catering to a clientele seeking a versatile watch suitable for active lifestyles while retaining the brand's horological standards. The 5060 laid the groundwork for the Aquanaut's subsequent development and popularity. This reference features a stainless steel case with a distinctive octagonal bezel, measuring 35.6 mm in diameter. It houses an automatic movement, specifically the caliber 330 SC, known for its reliability and slim profile. The watch is fitted with a sapphire crystal, providing scratch resistance and clear visibility of the dial. The case design incorporates a screw-down crown, contributing to its water resistance. As an initial Aquanaut reference, the 5060 holds particular interest for collectors tracing the evolution of Patek Philippe's sport watch offerings. Its relatively compact size compared to later Aquanaut models appeals to those who prefer a more understated presence on the wrist. The 5060 was produced for a limited period, making it a notable piece for enthusiasts of the brand's modern history.

Some thoughts on the vintage Patek Aquanaut.
I always had a soft spot for the Aquanaut, more than for the Nautilus, by the way. The 5060 and the 5066, and the 5065. I don't care about the see through case back, so for me, it would be between the 5060 and the 5065. So the question is why I didn't get one, yet... First, here are the reasons of m

1st post :-)
hi all. After a few months having fun with your great and very useful posts and awesome Pateks, here I am with a few daily shots of mine. My first Patek was the 5110p, which is still my favourite, then a 5060j and recently this year a great 5905p and a 3800. A 5110r is on it's way I hope next week.
