United KingdomOmega Speedmaster MKII 1970 Custom PVD
Well what can I say about this beautiful watch. Have you ever seen
such a cool looking Omega.
The Speedmaster MKII was produced from 1969 and this ‘Exotic dial’ version was made in 1969, 72 and 74 I believe. This version’s movement serial number puts it just inside 1970 so it is 36 years old and when it came to me it looked it as well.
The case was in terrible condition as the finish was very accurate ‘rough’ brushed stainless steel meeting polished steel with a sharp edge. The years had worn the edges and some one had rubbed it down so my choice was kill or cure and I think I have cured it… what do you think?
This is a one of a kind and I don’t think there is another – and it is very cool on the wrist!
NB: This watch is a customize vintage watch and was 'never' manufactured by Omega in 1970 PVD coated.
Here are the technical details regarding PVD
PVD system we uses for coating tools and dies employ the Cathodic
Arc system as it can coat tools below the annealing temperature of
tools at 200 - 450 degree Celsius to meet the tolerance of the
material/metal used. Usually high speed steel (HSS) tools are coated at
about 300 - 350 degree Celsius which is below the annealing temperature
of HSS so that the HSS tools will not lose its hardness.
The coating is even all over and the finish is 'matt' black.
First let me say i am very proud of this
watch ! It was an idea I had of PVD coating another one of these pieces
privately for myself and now somehow I have made one for sale.
Anyway what you get with this watch is the 1970 top of the tree Speedmaster 17 jewel 12 hour manual chronograph.
The dial is very complicated and yet very simple to view, unlike the moon watch this dial is grey with an orange Omega logo that matches the chronograph seconds hand, the registers are slightly sunk and bevelled, they read 30 minute elapsed time on right with an orange hand, 12 hour elapsed time on the bottom also orange hand and the constant seconds register is on the left which is red. The outside edge of the bezel is 'fringe' decorated with blocks of orange, pale red and in areas where the white 'bearding' crosses the blocks are pink. This dial is all original although the hands have been replaced with a NOS hand set from Omega, Bienne'.
The dial hour markers have
slightly aged which gives the overall look that contrast of 'Ultra
Modern' with a vintage twist! Very, very, cool!!!
Dimensions: width/44mm inc. crown * depth/14.5mm * length/45mm
The movement serial number
places it's manufacture in 1970 the movement which is a gilt Lemania
based Omega Cal. 861, lever escapement, 17 jewels, mono- metallic
balance, flat balance spring hand wind movement. (all metal no
acrylic). The movement is as you can see in perfect shape and has been
serviced and timed.
The stainless steel case is in amazing condition after the PVD
treatment and is just gorgeous to behold. The bracelet is also vintage,
correct for the watch and in perfect condition.
However it also has a twist, I had the Omega stamp which is in relief on the clasp filled and enamelled in 'Omega Orange' to match the dial and hands! I know it is very cool also!
