The Hour Glass and Parmigiani Fleurier: A Partnership to be Remembered

This month of November 2012, Parmigiani Fleurier is very proud to officially celebrate its Partnership with The Hour Glass, one of The most diverse and potent luxury watch retailers in South-east Asia.

This corporation, founded by a Singaporean family, has relentlessly promoted and developed watchmaking culture since its creation in 1979, raising horology awareness and sharing its fondness for watches throughout Asia. In this sense, Parmigiani Fleurier feels very close to both the story and the philosophy of The Hour Glass and is honoured to be pursuing the same goals together for many years to come.

Three events are planned at the beginning of November, reflecting the first common steps of two partners. November 1st will mark the bond in Bangkok at the stunning Phya Thai Palace. November 6th will cast the celebration in Singapore, in the iconic Esplanade Concert Hall where Dr. Henry Tay, founder and Executive Chairman of The Hour Glass, will pronounce an inauguration speech. Finally, November 7th is set to complete the trail in Kuala Lumpur, within Shangri-La Hotel’s famous Lafite restaurant.
The events’ festivities will gather VIP managers from both brands and include a 5-star sit-down dinner, stunning performances and a showcasing of the latest Parmigiani Fleurier models.

Three cities, three stunning venues but a single theme: “Exact and Exultant”. This is Parmigiani Fleurier’s tag phrase as a fully independent manufacture and it denotes the fundamental tension existing within the brand between utter control and absolute freedom; between classical aesthetics and bondless extravagancy; between precision and innovation. The Hour Glass shares and values the independence and authenticity which define Parmigiani Fleurier and regards it as the key to a long term growth in South-East Asia.

No model could better illustrate Parmigiani Fleurier’s creativity and potential for innovation than the Bugatti Super Sport.

Created in 2010 in reflexion to the Bugatti Veyron car bearing the same name, this astonishing timepiece features a dial setting wheel at a 90° angle to the movement spindle, thus allowing a perpendicular time display. The Bugatti Super Sport is a world first, a demonstration of how Parmigiani Fleurier’s creativity knows no other restriction than that of mechanical feasibility.

It is of little surprise that The Hour Glass chose this iconic model to be the base for an exclusive edition of 10 pieces, especially manufactured in the honor of this valuable partnership.

The Bugatti Super Sport – The Hour Glass is a darker, sportier version than the original, pushing the identification to the car yet one step further. The timepiece’s case and buckle in white gold have been tuned to a magnificent anthracite color by means of a very special surface treatment (an ion bondage technique of great strength called “ADLC”).

The watches’ dial has also been redesigned to feature a tight grid on which the indexes and delta-shaped hands are placed, thus mirroring the front radiator grill of a car. This exclusive edition of 10 pieces is a tribute to The Hour Glass and their wonderful commitment to watchmaking, to the city of Singapore where their adventure started – the only city in the world which hosts a night race Formula 1 Grand Prix within its walls for that matter…

Restoration within Parmigiani Fleurier is a small activiy (relatively speaking), but has an immense impact, touching the brand’s every realization.

It pleases Michel Parmigiani to say in fact, that the importance of Restoration is inversely proportional to its size: the brand simply wouldn’t exist without it.

Restoration, or the art of reviving an artefact of the past to its former glory has ignited the quest for excellency within the brand; it has taught a humbling lesson through the witnessing of ancient greatness; it has given Parmigiani Fleurier the drive to perpetuate a watchmaking tradition onwards.
As a symbol of this fundamental bond to restoration, a dual time zone pocket watch belonging to the Watchmaking Museum in Le Locle, Switzerland, is to be flown into Singapore especially to mark the celebration of the new partnership between Parmigiani Fleurier and The Hour Glass.

*Dual Time Zone and Calendar Pocket Watch Material: Gold, silver and enamel
Year of manufacturing: approx.. 1870 in Vallée de Joux, Switzerland
From the Maurice Yves Sandoz Collection – a gift  to the Watchmaking museum in Le Locle

Strikingly, this ancient pocket watch will be showcased in direct confrontation with the Tonda Hémisphères timepiece which is its modern counterpart. This GMT watch manufactured by Parmigiani Fleurier is a homage to the watchmakers who were creative with time zones, generations before us.
