ZHANG ZIYI BY MARIO SORRENTI
An inside look behind the scenes
There’s something particularly intimate in the working relationship between a great fashion photographer and his subject. For the best results there has to be an atmosphere of trust. The model and the photographer want the same thing – both hope that a fleeting moment captured through a lens will tell a story, reveal a secret, or forge a bond with the people who see the image.
When Mario Sorrenti was offered a commission by Swiss watchmaker OMEGA to photograph Zhang Ziyi in New York City for a global campaign, he was thrilled.
It wasn’t that the Naples-born New Yorker wasn’t used to working with beautiful women – his images of Kate Moss are legendary. His spreads in Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar define provocative fashion photography. He is increasingly in demand as a director of commercials and music videos featuring some of the entertainment world’s most iconic faces.
He had met Zhang Ziyi previously when he photographed her for the Chinese edition of Vogue and the actress was pleased to know that they would have the opportunity to work together again in New York City.
Zhang Ziyi is an actress of rare beauty and monumental achievement. Following her cinematic début in Zhang Yimou’s The Road Home, which won the Silver Bear Award at the 2000 Berlin Film Festival, she has gone on to appear in 16 more movies including Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, House of Flying Daggers and Memoirs of a Geisha.
Her reputation in her home country is such that Forbes magazine ranks Zhang as the woman with the most social influence in China.
Zhang Ziyi’s award-winning performance as the headstrong Jen in the acclaimed Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon led to film roles which have spread her fame far beyond the borders of her native China.
OMEGA knew that if one of the world’s best fashion photographers was put on a set with the celebrated actress, the results would be spectacular. Mario Sorrenti is known for his use of minimal sets, choosing to let the image of his subject convey the story.
And Zhang Ziyi is used to telling stories. In these behind-the-scenes images, she is preparing for the shoot in a hidden space in New York City not far from Times Square. A hairdresser and makeup artist are on hand. There is also a watchmaker from OMEGA. Mostly, though, a world-class photographer and an international screen star are conspiring to communicate a message through a single image.
