The vicinity of powerful magnets in MRI machines are detrimental to watches. Older 1.5 Tesla machines are being phased out in Singapore. Most are now 2.0 Tesla instruments and there is even a 3.0 Tesla research MRI at the Neurological Research Institute (SGH).
Although designed to maximise the field around the scanner bed, even as the magnetic field falls off in strength exponentially, it still affects the area where personnel traverse. It is standard practice to remove personal items like watches, credit cards and magnetic security passes before entering the area.
