Dalai Lama and watches...

Jun 26, 2006,12:24 PM

He became obsessed with watches in his early youth, and - against all advice - he decided to wear a wristwatch. He acquired a Rolex and an Omega soon. The one he got as a present from Mr. Roosevelt was actually a Patek Philippe, and a complicated one... I think he never wears the PP, though. Repairing mechanical watches (with various degrees of success... - his own words!) is still one of his favourite occupations.
That's all I remember from his autobiography for this topic.

Have a nice day,

Kisgabi

Does anyone perchance have sources for what wristwatches are in the Dalai Lama's collection? I've read in several articles that he's a passionate collector... I've always been interested to know if there's a JLC in his fold. Regards,

Not sure

One of the main premises of Buddhism is practicing detachment to posessions. My guess is that the Dalai Lama would not own a luxury wrist watch while his people suffer endless indignations in Tibet under Chinese rule. Working with international relief org...

Most of the time he doesn't wear anything, but he is spotted from times to times wearing a Rolex watch which was given to him by President Roosevelt
