I think we have to start with gold plate and rolled gold don't make a gold watch, at best it is gold colored.
After that look for 750 (18k) and the weight.  Anything else is babble.
I have only purchased one gold watch, a Tissot.  It came with a certificate that it contains 28.3 grams 18k gold.
There are no questions.
I made a gold watch for my wife which contains 39 grams.  Again no questions.
There are so many ways of making a gold case, most are stamped and then given a final light milling, but it is possible to make a gold case for a mans watch with less than 8 grams of gold these days with electrochemical methods.
The only way we have to keep these things honest is to demand always the gold purity and the weight.
Otherwise we will be lost in the realm of marketing pander, without hope.
