Dear friends,
I was lucky enough to spend more than 2 hours in Philippe Dufour's workshop last Friday. I was very impressed !
To make a long story short, he is really the greatest watchmaker I have ever met. Not only because he makes the very best watches nowadays but also because he has an intelligent and clever view of watchmaking. For the first time in my life I really felt horology was an art and understood the meaning of mechanical poetry.
I am astrophysicist (theoricist) and degreed in philosophy. It makes me quite far from understanding micromechanics into the details. But I would say that Dufour's approach transcend its own field of competance and really revives the great tradition of horology.
The only thing that I cannot understand is that he still has (if I understood well) a minute repeater with "grande et petite sonnerie" available ! How can it be that Patek sells without problem it's grand complications whereas the very best on Earth is still waiting for a buyer ? Dear forumers, this is an opprtunity to get a piece of horological history (of, course, you will have the pay the price...).
To conclude, I would say that meeting Philippe Dufour was a great pleasure. His workshop is a marvel. His timepieces are without equivalent. And the man is very nice !
Best regards,
Aurel.
