Vintage Rail Road wristwatches. Some nice specimens.
At the end of the 50's, early 60's many manufactures offered a railroad wristwatch.
Among the most famous, Universal Genève, Omega, Longines, and Girard Perregaux.
The interesting common point between all these watches, a dial which is pretty similar.
White, big hour markers in black, sometimes 24 hours added, 35 mm case ( or very close to ) .
Here are some specimens.
There were many others, from brands such as Bulova, and Ball, this last one having to be mentioned as there was a legal conflict between Omega and Ball, which forced Omega to remove their Railroad watches from the catalog and to stop the production.
Still, I find these watches very interesting.

Purpose of.
What were the origins of this type of watch, what is their purpose, if any?
Well yes...
...that is a good idea I imagine :P But who started them in this trend and why did they evolve in this particular fashion? Pilot\'s watches were also offered in the same era and also had great legibility, which I assume was an important factor.
Railroad watches came earlier, as pocket watches. Look at a current Mondaine watch...

Railroad watches date to the very late 19th Century.
Railroaders all over Europe and the United States/Canada found they needed a very accurate timepiece, for reasons stated above. You could liken their development to Marine Chronometers-a strong need for a very accurate device so as to avoid catastrophes.

Have several times been close to pulling the trigger on an Italian State Railways Universal Geneve but never quite committed. Those are still relatively affordable and a good selection exists. I suppose some of the ones you showed are more in the unobtani...
I find them interesting and have had three
of the Bulova Accutron. I can't find the third right now, which has 24 hour markers, but here are two of them: Stainless case, tight lugs Gold case, fancy lugs A couple of the real things and a few dials Cazalea ...
